I just bought a very nice, low hour 066. I am dying to do some muffler mods. It has the red limiter caps and it is running good with the high speed almost all the way out. Will I be able to run it rich enough if i open the muffler? What keeps the jets from moving around? They turn real easy.

The limiter caps do help to hold the jets in place, you may need the stihl tool to remove them if you have to adjust after your mod.or butcher them out and replace them after you get dialed in.

If They Are As You Say!!!!!

and you open the muffler or even just get a dual port cover,,, cleanest and easiest appreciable performance gain,,, you will need to get a limiter cap puller
(lefthand thread) remove them and trim off the stop tabs, get a tach or with some one who has one and set your saw to spec RPM 13,500 then reinstall the limitercaps with out the stops,, if ya want to get some new caps once ya have the rpm set and reinstall them as they do provide damping for the LH adjusting screws!!!!  :givebeer: :givebeer:

So am I understanding this correct. The carb is fully adjustable under the limiter caps and the caps just keep the jets from vibrating one way or the other? All I have to do is pry the old ones out and wreck them if neede. Tune the saw and put new ones in and the jets will stay put?

I have a stock 660

To those who are in the know is my stock 660 facing the same solution as moe is detaling above? Not to sound stupido but what is a limiter cap?

The limiter cap is there so when I set up a saw new or in for repair that I can remove them to make tuning adjustments, but when I'm done I set the limiter so you can't damage the saw.But they are fully adjustably.

thanks

I figured it was something like that. I have been replacing my old saws [basically done now] 288's 55's etc with new saws in the last year. I have yet to have the need to look very close at my 660 7900 200t etc.

Not to derail this thread kevlar and moe, but would an 020 I ran have these limiter caps? I ran it with the muffler loose and rattling around for a couple hours. based on what you guys are saying about changing mixture ratios to match exhoust flows do you think i hurt the little bugger; it seems to not run all that well since i did that.

Pull the muffler right off that 020 check the piston for scuffs.but I think it just needs some tuning.

no limiter caps I presume

I hope the little fellow is ok ill check I never really us ethe saw [back up to the 200t] so no great loss if it is all scored up. Perhaps I could hone it.

On the 660 muffler would drilling holes in it and removing the screen be the same as buying a dual port?

When I do my muffler mods i like to insert a pipe into the new holes, length depends on muffler.I believe the exhaust should "bounce" around instead of just blowing out a hole(but that is just my opinion)

The caps are there to limit you the user from tuning the adjustment more than 90 deg.

If you just pry them out without using the proper 6.00 stihl tool your gonna also remove the little metal cage with the slots for the tab stops that holds them in its just pressed in,,,,,,, and then you can forget putting them back in all together
the tool is left handed thread and so is the thread in the limiter cap so you turn it to the left to insert it in the cap,,, if you look close when you turn the cap to the left w/a screwdriver all the way as far as the stop will let you,,, the tab will line up with the slot then insert the puller,,, the limiter cap will come out on the tool... the caps are really cheap,,, less than a dollar,,, it only takes a little more time to do it right,,,, remember,,, Lakeside53 said this,,, "Dont' hit Anything with a hammer" when I pull mine on my personal saws I replace them with new ones,,, I do however cut the little tab off before I pop them back in,,, to put them in I only thread them a few turns on the tool the give then line up the screw slots on the L OR H and pop it in and screw out the tool and your done!!!!!

So when I turn the limiter caps with a screw driver, am I even turning the jets? Can a creative redneck like myself use something to take them out or should I just wreck them?

If you carefully drive a drywall screw into them you can pull them out and save them most times, or so I am told. Then use a pair of fingernail clippers to trim off the protruding tabs, set them back in and it's fully adjustable.
DO THIS AT YOURE OWN RISK, I have never tried it!! Or you can go to you're dealer and get the $6 tool made just for that.

yes you are turning the needle valve jet,,,, some people use drywall screws and yes it usually wrecks them and yes it will also usually ruin the little aluminum cage that holds them in,,, and you just need to keep up with you adjustments,,, So get your self a tach while your @ it,,, on a 020t or a 660 its worth it to keep up with your H adjustments any way JMHO

The screw will work even if it pulls out the aluminium piece it will press right back in.Sometimes the limiter caps are butchered when I get them,I have a special tool a cut off screw driver with a screw soldered on for such occasions.

cool!!!!

ive seen the cage so mangled there is no hope!!!! good to know!!!!

I too have seen them mangled but It is a rarity, somebody who really should not be working on saws.

I have a tach/dwell meter but I don't think it will work on small engines. What is a good small engine tach and where can I order one from? Thanks
