This thread has me thinking. I run my 034 with 20 inch full chisel 3/8. Maybe I should try .325 or skiptooth. Or maybe drop back to a 16 inch bar. Points to ponder...

I really like the 036, particularly the later versions - the 036-pro and MS360...

The 361 can do a little more than the 360, but not that much more....

OK.............I will buy that...............I just didn't like the 036!!!

Fair enough!

Trust me..........I am not going to bash the 036/360 and say that the 361 is the be all end all saw of the 60cc class..........we have plenty of blowhards here to do that already!!!

Not that Im unhappy with what I have, but, I am a gearhead. Main reason I posted this is I am going to make my 034 an 036 when it quits.

Nope............last I looked dealer had 147 new Stihl saws in the box
not counting the ones in back ready to go plus display saws.

I was aiming that at whoever said you could get a 440 and a 441. The dealer said that when he told one of his customers that the 440 were not being produced anymore the guy bought the last 3 he had.

I wanted the tried and true 440 when I bought my 441, but the 3 dealers I went to said "Good luck finding one" and they didnt act interested in trying to find one. I was a little spooked by the new strato engine in the 441, but I dont regret it now.

I just wanted to add that the 440 is one bad mofo:cheers:

I bought a saw once, I liked it a lot!!!!
I bought another saw once, didn't really impress me.
What do you do?:monkey:

I happen to have an 036, MS360 Pro and a 361,,, Ran the 361 today on some Snags left behind by Humberto @ Bro Steves house clearing the fenceline around his pasture,,,nothing over 12-14" mostly oak and sweet Gum,,, quick work, without a hitch,, other than almost getting the 4-wheeler stuck!!!:chainsawguy: Shoulda got some pics but I agree with Andy the 036, MS360 are not that far behind if anything they are very close
;) I shoud say my 036 only has a muffler mod but it will pull a 20 inch bar in hardwood with .375 all day long no problem,,,, as the Bush wacker said!!!!! the 361 AV is no doubt better!!! JMHO

Lets try this comparison!!!

I was never a big fan of the 036. In stock form is was just a lackluster saw. Since coming here I have ran one that I muffler modded for a friend and the saw was better.

The 361 comes out and it does everything the 036 didn't............namely pulling an 18-20" bar with 3/8's chain with authority. Add to that the better AV that the 361 has.

The 361 gets my vote!!!

I have hundreds of hours on 034 and 036's, 95% with 20 in. bars. They all pulled 20 in. of 3/8 with plenty of authority in hardwoods up to 15 inches or so. I have run my nephews 361 about 10 hours and to me it didn't feel as powerful. I believe it will get better when its broke in well so I will not say its less. Mabe the 036 you got your initial impression from wasn't well tuned. A clogged air filter or improper carb adjustment will make any saw feel like a dog. The av on the 361 is no doubt better, as for me 4 or 5 hour s a day on a 036 does not seem to be a problem.

You are right about the 361,,, about 5-10 more tanks and switch to synthetic oil,,, mod the muffer and you will be impressed!!!!

Yeah if someones saws not tuned they're wasting their time, I'd like a day on a 361 just to see what's so good about it, I always thought 361's were quite a lot less power than 036's and strangled with emissions stuff but I'm guessing a 361 is no different than a 360/036 even if it is all fancy and modern

I read those reports back in 2004 - that's what lead me to the MS361......

I've used several 036 Pro's and 360 Pro's. Bought all of them off eBay; later sold them to friends of mine, who are still using them. I did a muffler mod and put in a new carb rebuild kit on them and they cut great in this hard oak we have here in West Texas. I preferred them to the 044's and 046's as they were lighter and better balanced for my handling.

I like my 361's even better; because, I have a muffler mod and a woods mod on both of them.

I dunno, I guess I haven't been spoiled by running a 361. I am perfectly happy with an 036, bone stock. Mine wears a 20" bar and 3/8" chisel chain and I saw primarily oak and if you keep her wound up, the chips will fly. But then again, I've ran a 20" bar with .325 chain on a 50cc saw and it got the job done too. Just my opinion!
