EPA...sounds like just another case of the Gov't. screwing things up. Sorry to hear about your 5100 burning up, I'd definately push very hard on getting it replaced or new P&C for nothing!

Well if you count the 372 sitting on my bench and the 261 and a 41 and the three 395 I sold in the last year (sorry urbicide) your on the list for the next one I get ....

Thanks to everyone for all the info.

I have to take up for my Dealer. They always check, run and adjust every piece of equipment that goes out the door and offer a free inspection after the first few tanks of fuel. They always used a tach and they have been around a long time. Good people. Excellent mechanic.

Im not a pro mechanic but I know enough to pick a good one. :)

I don't know about cooling but yes it would allow the motor to be richened up some, lowering those rpm's. That cat muffler is nothing more than a afterburner. It will burn up the emissions as they exit the engine lowering over all emissions numbers. The bad part about a cat muffler is they get extremely hot which is how it works. They tend to choke performace somewhat too. Alot of saws have them and have no issues with them. They are a cost effective way to lower emissions without having to redesign the whole unit.

Stihl used them on some of their smaller saws a long while back. I think they still use them on their FS55/45/46 trimmers, I know they did, I haven't looked in awhile. They also had them on some of their blowers for awhile. Stihl has made it clear they don't want to burn off the emissions in the muffler, they want the emissions burnt up during combustion before it reaches the muffler. Thats why they're going strato. Strato nets the same clean results as the cat muffler but without that hot afterburner in front of the engine, fuel being more completely burnt in the cylinder netting better (less) fuel consumption as well.

Its only a matter of time before the fuel injector comes along for small handheld power equipment along with new cylinder designs to go with it. When that happens and becomes the norm the EPA problem will be resolved for good. Course EPA will turn around and make us buy tags for our equipment and make us get our saw emission tested once a year, sounds funny doesn't it, don't under estimate those sorry ba-stards...
Hey Tommy, I wasn't very clear but by better cooling I was refering to the other major change on the PS-5105, an "improved air flow system", not the catalytic muffler.

I was with ya and understood. I think improved air flow is usually pointed toward the carb and increased performance. This new saw may well have been designed to increase cooling of the engine by changing the body inlets around the cylinder, if so thats a good thing, :clap::clap::clap:

Thats right, we don't need brand bashing everytime someone has trouble with a saw. Steve

I would have to agree it's a leaning condition and cheezy dealers on 1 account aside from my Hot Rod.

rbtree was the person that tuned me into 5100's. If I'm correct, he used that saw for 3 years hard core "showing off" at work and play. I don't ever remember him posting a problem here or in any of the other sites.

I'd think better cooling would allow the saw to be set a little leaner, or not burn up as fast set like they are. I too think saws will have direct fuel injection like Rotax snowmobile engines have now in the near future. Maybe that's why some use the cat muffler to bridge the gap as strato won't be needed then. The way government is growing they'll have 1 EPA agent for every saw owner soon, you got that last word right . Steve

I'm with everyone that thinks the carb is not adjusted correct. I can't see a company like dolmar/makita putting a saw on the market that they know is going to fail, if their trying to break into the market share this would only end up biting them in the ass in the long run.

These saws wouldn't have any problems if it wasn't for the EPA and ethonal both a crock of sh...... . Steve
