Ever seen a chain like this?!!!

This is a sample of a race chain sent to me by Fire8. This is an old chain used years ago. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I certainly have not.

Never seen anything like that. My guess would be for chip clearance.
 
That really is an old chain, plenty of advancements made to race chains since that one was ground out. Cutting the rear of the tooth off was to reduce friction but too much was taken off the back end of that chain, not enough from the front. The cutting edge needs to be further back, more centered over the rivet below it.
 
Weight and friction reduction to the max, I always like the way a chain cuts just before the start loosing teeth when filing.
