OK, got piston, cleaned bore with acid, but still some apparent small scoring of the chrome.
It runs great, but I'd like to get a new/good used cylinder. Please recommend sources, or let me know if you have one.

What other cylinders would fit?

We also bored out some of the holes in the muffler...will do more later.

Does anyone else get burned by the exhaust? When I have it apart next, I think I'll put a port in the front! Meantime, I made a little deflector to force the exhaust, which works great.

I'm not entirely sure but, I believe the 254-257-261-262 are built on the same cases. Kinda like 362-365-371-372 are on the same chassis. Get an IPL for that series 254 etc. and start looking at part numbers. I would imagine the only difference between models is the displacement and appearance. Saw Troll can you help?

Same family of saws (154-family), but I suspect the 154 and 254 cases isn't 100% interchangable with the other models.

The IPLs have to be looked up one by one, none of them cover more than one model.

If you are using OEM parts and want a straight bolt on your only choice for a replacement is 154/254.
Cases from 154,254,257,261,262 will work on all saws.
Cases with crankshaft will only work for saw groups as follows, 154-254, or 257-261-262.
All saws have the same stroke but con rod is longer in 257-262.

Aftermarket may switch things up some. I don't know as I only use factory stuff.
 
Careful here fellers, I think the 254 has a different stroke than the 262 and 257. Not 100% sure, but it's worth checking. I believe Mike Acres site is in error.

The $200 P&C isn't going to happen for this $150 saw!
The interchange question is only for the cylinder, since I have a new piston.
My 254 book is down in the shop, but I know the bore is 45mm.
I'll search for IPLs, but if someone has links handy I'd appreciate getting them.

This is a hot saw, more powerful than my 029, but I've got to stop buying pistons!
The original owner got several years of good service out of it.

Stroke is the same on all the saws, but read what Stihl Crazy said! :)

Thanks, Niko. I'm not sure I quite understand how that might work, but that's not unusual for me :dizzy:. A longer connecting rod with the same stroke. I guess that would mean that the crankshaft has a different geometry, having implications for how it mates up with the case. I'm supposing that the progenitor of these great saws was the 154. It's interesting to note that instead of just enlarging the bore for the 257 and 262, they made more fundamental changes, which I'm sure had a cost.

They did it for the 262xp - the 257 and 261 were later spin-offs.
