took the muffler off for the first time

:greenchainsaw: She runs better without the cheesegrater , still takes 6-8 pulls to kick. I busted the left side handle over tightening the attaching bolt, magila gorilla style :censored: :monkey:

I think I will get some more years out of the old girl eh ?

Won't that let you over tighten and crush the muffler cover? It serves as a spacer and lets you snug the bolts down tight and still not crush the cover.

I dunno;.. I'm a greenie... , I didn't over muscle it this time; the cover is pretty heavy gauge.

if you are gonna leave teh baffle out, put some spacers in to keep teh muffler from spliting/cracking........

I agree. This is what I have seen on mufflers with no internals.

Just to be on the safe side I would cut down some small pipe to length and feed the bolts through it.

Thanks Bill & cj , will do. I was hoping less restriction would help her breathe / start easier.

No helmut, & I'm sure several other safety violations;I did poop in my pants though.:monkey:

i drilled out the holes in the baffle on my 3300, along with teh new outlet,,, i never completely removed one,,, i think you need some back pressure,,, and then you have to re tune teh carb to compensate for the muffler mod...

Kinda what i figured. Think i'll just leave it stock as i would be scared to try and tune it.

Are you talking spark arrestor screen or the baffle? Leaving the screen out shouldn't hurt, but leaving the baffle with the larger holes out, seems to me thats part of the stucturual part of the muffler. I know guys drill those holes out larger. By the way, the piston looks great! should last long time.

Gregg,

Reckon I'll just put the thing back in , didn't look like it was very restrictive.
The Harley guy in me has a fondness for straight pipes :)

Bill ;thx. I had the carb rebuilt last yr. at a local shop , she wouldn't start till my arm went numb beforehand, switching to higher octane fuel in the mix seemed to help also.
