I was thinking the same thing earlier tonight about the Poulan/craftsman, homelite/john deere, dolmar/Makita stuff. Was it cheaper to buy the poulan than the craftsman?

I think that I paid $153 for my 3400 new in 1982 or 1983. I had a buddy buy it at the PX, so it was less than retail.

Well I've heard a Jonsereds 70e was about $500 just before the 80's according to my FIL. Homelites and Macs were slightly less, depending on the size of the saw. We really don't have much to complain about nowadays if you figure the inflation lol

My buddies dad bought a new Jonsereds 52e for $369 in 1977 and still has the receipt. My new 028 super was $224 in 1986.

Good saws are about as cheap today as they ever were.

Consider you would have at least a 1/4 if not a 1/3 the price of a new pickup in a top of the line saw back in the late '60s.

Looking at it that way a top of the line saw today should sell for $5000?

The early saws in the late fiftys and sixtys were expensive.
I don't have any brochures handy but you would be amazed.
I did have a new Partner P100 with a 599.00 price tag in 1979.

It's amazing how freakin' expensive anything like that was back in the 50's to early 70's given the average mans salary at the time.
Saws,mowers,tillers,anything like that.
More recently, about 20 yrs ago I bought an 026 and paid about $500 cdn.The equivalent isn't much different now.It would suck to be trying to make $$ by selling saws these days i would think.

I don't know retail but in 1978-9 my 360 pro homie was $225 and my dads 70e was $246. My cousin was a dealer so he gave us his price.

When I recently moved I found the receipt for my Homelite 540 I bought new in 1991, it was $531 with a 20" bar and chain.

I'm looking at a receipt from a 2.0 Craftsman/Poulan Micro 3/30/78. It was $89.99. I was with my dad when he bought that saw. The kicker is the bar oil was $3.99, and the mix oil was $1.99.

I also remember my dad turning into a cuttin fool with that little beast. Probably the first dependable saw he ever owned.

Bought a Poulan 3400 with 18" bar new in 1986. Was just under $300 with taxes.

Here is a Sears Craftsman ad from 1980, for 5.2 & 4.2 and a 2.3 (Poulans):msp_ohmy:

Was gonna say that $246.00 was nowhere near right for a 70E....but if your cousin was a dealer.....I paid (retail) $249.95 in April 1977 for my 49SP and I remember the 621 that I really wanted was $375.00 and was way beyond my reach......I'm pretty sure the 70E was around $475.00-$500.00 retail back then, like TK said. Spike60 sent me a MSRP sheet from back around 80-81...it's at the shop..I'll try to remember to bring it home and revisit this thread.....I know it had prices for quite a few Jonsereds 49sp 621, 451E, 70E, 910E etc.

026

I know in 1991 I bought a new Stihl 026 it was 349.00 so was a husky 51 and a dollar 115 a super25 Polan in1983 was 200.00 but a micro 25 was 100

I paid $1200 for a Poulan 245A and hydro splitter back in 1977. My dad put me into the firewood business at age 16. :msp_mellow:
