Every time I see those piped saws I get all eager to build a pipe for one of my saws. Why do guys weld em up and not hydro form them? Any of you blokes bothered?

No worries at all Chippy, plenty more where that came from

Well that would be the ultimate, but good luck getting some from Matt. He drives a hard bargain when it comes to Cutty Cutty chain. I think Neil still hasn't had the chance to try some after all this time.
I have some cutty cutty 3/8 full chisel so what does that make me?

I think its easier to modify the shape with cones and tubes welded together. Hydro form not so much, you would have to start all over again.

I have some 18 odd inch diameter Wattle logs in good condition and have been asked to rip some slabs out of them, approx 2.5 to 3 inches thick.

Should I avoid this and get them done on a bandsaw? There's one local to me that can do this.

8 posters can be done in under 3 minutes, we were ripping Ironbark that weekend and swamp mahogany in the speed events.
There are a few hydro formed pipes getting around, mainly ones taken off of bikes and modified, ugly as. There is one hydro made for a saw that I know of, and it was made right and is fast. Generally the modified bike ones don't work well. I weld my own one little piece at a time, it works for me and I get the angles the way I want them.

You'll be lucky to find some that old without grub holes thru' them Chippy, if dry black wattle might be hard to rip, hard to say w/o seeing it.

same sex saws

im tryin to be progressive i think i got an open mind but i just canna abide puttin other brands in my tool box beside the stihls
Instead of embracing all Light, Grunty Bark Terminators, you are advocating sawcest? How many generations before they start sprouting mutations?

Hydro form them is the best, neatest way.
Most guys weld them, so they can make it a neater fit around the brake handle etc.
That's a very specialised job, guys like me are flat out changing a spark plug, let alone something so technical..... There is a couple of guys on the thread that are pretty handy in the calculated design of a particular pipe suited to whichever saw they choose to put it on!
