Here's the situation: We have a 14 feet wide area between the sidewalk and the side of my corner house on which are growing a coast live oak and a bay tree, both about 30 feet tall, both 4 feet from the sidewalk, and 6 feet apart from each other. The oak is 5 feet from our home sewer line and is right to the size of becoming a "heritage tree"; another month and the city won't let us cut it down.
The inside scoop: my wife is worried about the oak roots in the sewer line and having a (eventually) huge oak 10 feet from the house. The bay grew first, so the oak has very few branches on the bay tree side.
Which tree do I remove?
