So, I just went to install a new Episan piston in an 064 and when I checked the squish (gasketless) with .060 solder, I was shocked to have the saw turn over a full 360 and no contact with the solder!!

I just measured the deck height difference between the Episan piston and a stock Stihl and it looks like around .061 difference!!

I've got two choices. Send the two pistons I just bought back to Greece, or figure a way to make them work. For round figures, I'm guessing that we're talking about .080 squish clearance, not to mention the timing change.

Any ideas???:msp_cursing:

I thought the 046 piston was 52mm and the 066 was 54mm ??? you should see that difference real easy.

The 046/064 share the same bore diameter. Barneyb is probably correct. There should be some major differences in the skirts as well IIRC.

I wouldn't use them. You'd have to turn the jugs down, and then the next time the saw needed a new piston, a proper piston would not fit your turned down jug.

I'm guessing you got a 046 piston. Compression height on a 064 is 23.00 and 046 is 22.50 mm.

You could be right about them being miss-boxed at Episan and they're 046 pistons. I only went as far as measuring the deck height and didn't measure the overall height. Thanks for the thought on that.....It hadn't crossed my mind.

I'll do more measuring tomorrow.

Well, after more measuring this morning, the only thing I can figure is that they accidentally machined the deck height of an 064 piston blank to 046 specs!!:msp_mad:

The overall length is too long to be an 046 piston in the wrong box.

I imagine I'll have to send them back to get it sorted out, but if not, they might be an interesting piston to do some playing with in a different saw.

It's too bad the skirt is a little narrow, because they would make a killer piston to do a pop-up in a 181/281 Husky....There's tons of extra skirt length and about .040 extra deck height!! (Just thinkin' about making lemonade out of the lemons!):msp_thumbup:

i know that others have used Episan pistons without problems, but i know i am done with them unless there is absolutely nothing else available. i bought a 346OE piston and the wrist pin wouldn't fit nor would the circlips seat properly. i ended up using the OEM pin and flex shaft to deepen the circlip grooves.

I've used quite a few Episans now, and have run into a few little problems, but nothing major and never had a failure.

I think this is a case of an error at the factory......I guess it happens. Sure is a good thing that I'm not a "slap it together and run it" kind of guy. I would have had a crappy running saw with no compression!!:msp_cursing:

064 Squish

Hello everyone, I recently rebuilt a 064 and I have done many Stihl saw's and never had a Compression issue. With a OEM Cylinder I was getting 120 psi compression. With aftermarket it dropped to 100 psi. I had the cylinder squish measured and it as over .80ths.

What do I do now. What I am going to do now is remove the gasket and see what the Compression does. Any one with an idea on this issue with the 064 Models? Is this 064 issue hence no real aftermarket kits?

Henry,

What brand of aftermarket piston did you use? I used a Golf piston when I rebuilt my 064 with no issues. I still have the thin base gasket as well.

WHat Brand 064

To be honest I got it from a E-bay seller. Partsandmore on E-bay is who sold me the kit. I am asking them more questions. this is something new I have encountered so not sure what to do. I have already lost some money on it.
