Dimensions for the Husqvarna case splitter tool

Anyone have the dimensions for the Husqvarna case splitter? Im ready to make mine ASAP. I found some in a link on here that said it was 4.25"x4.25" outside dimension but that looks awfully tiny.Can anyone give me some better dimensions? I have the steel ready to cut and weld just need the numbers...Thanks Lee

How far apart are the forks? or what size is the tubing on the top? your pics are great I can get the jest of it from those. I knew the 4.25"x 4.25" wasn't going to get it. I really apprieciate the help...Lee

The tubing is basically 1.5" x 1" x .125 wall rectangular tubing, but it must be a metric size, because it measures slightly over that (1.5" square tubing would be fine)......the flat plates that make the fork are .25" plate and the fork measures 1.125" inside and 1.625 outside.

The dimension in the fourth pic is important. I have used this splitter on a 359 and 346 without a problem. I used it on a 288, but I had to cock it in sideways to get it to work. I was praying the whole time that I wasn't going to put a hole in the case. The width needs to be enough to allow the crank weights to slip in and allow the jaws to clamp over the bearings.

Those saws should just fall apart. The bearings are not pressed onto the crank.

I will add that I have modded mine slightly to work on 288's. The jaws just needed a little tweak to fit over the crank. It will also work on 394/395's. I did break the tip off. I thought it was useless until I welded a bearing on the end. I think it works better now.

I have used mine on the 034 and 024, but not on the saws mentioned.

Sometimes they take a little persuasion to break the gasket seal but a puller shouldn't be necessary. A light tap with a drift on each of the studs that hold the case halves together should suffice (having removed the nuts off of the studs and the 2 drift pins).

Any pics? I'm just starting to look into building one. If there's a mod to make it would be nice to put it into the design

I just put it in the vise and spead the legs a little.

I notice that JockeyDeuce's splitter suffered the same problem as mine. The cone-shaped tip broke off. I just welded a ball-bearing on the end.

I've done dozens of saws with mine, I spread it as required for whatever I'm working on. I did have to grind a radius on the outside back fingers to make it fit into a 026 and get the push screw to sit square. Also I use the crank nut or the clutch spider in the ends of the cranks as a precaution now because I munched one on one of my own saws and had to rethread the mushroomed section.

Thanks! It'll still be scary as this will be the first case I've broken apart and it is one of my Contras.

Now can anyone suggest why the previous owner sealed this with a gob of black rubber sealant of some type.
This saw is an obvious restore by someone who had no idea what he was doing so I'm going through it and trying to fix what I can - and learning a lot in the process.

I'm trying to split the case so that I can remove the awful paint job and powder coat the case halves. Thanks for the help!
