soooo, after the "stripped" thread...

After the drubbing I got over there for not toeing the "a new saw is still a new saw even if it's had parts robbed from it" line, just how much grief do you think I'd get if I posted that I found out that the twin bucking spike/roller chain catcher I bought for my MS460 (but turned out to be MS361-spec) fit perfectly on and look GREAT on the Mighty MS290?

Yup, you got it! (IF, heh heh) if fits, I can go even LONGER between chain sharpenings because I can now lever the bar into the log! YAY!!!

Actually, 5 things to note:

(1) it was a direct bolt-on, 'cept the roller needs to be shortened a smidge to roll freely.

(2) no, it's not needed, it's purely overkill, and probably NOT a good idea to bolt it to the plastic clutch cover

(3) the mention of not needing to sharpen the chain harkens back to an old thread about newbs or homeowners forcing a cut instead of sharpening the chain, and

(4) I'll likely never get a 361, so I had to do something with the things! They are infinitely more functional on the Mighty MS290 than they were rattling around in the bottom of my tool box. I'll have to calculate the detrimental effects this modification had on my already dismal power-to-weight ratio. At least it didn't harm my intake air filtration!

(5) I gotta be working on something in the garage to justify being there by the wood stove an dbeer cooler, may as well be on this...

I'll let it ride for awhile and see what "chicks dig it" quotient it has and report later.

I may just have to try this on my 290! How much did those parts cost? Got part #'s? Yeah, it may be overkill, but I'd still like to have bigger spikes on the saw, even if only on the case side.

Lookin' good Bump. Not too aggressive for a 290 IMO. I was expecting to see some Lake or FHCW west coast Doug Fir spikes there. :hmm3grin2orange:

I like those roller chain catchers better than the flimsy bent aluminum tabs too. Nice. I am now wondering if they'd fit on one of my 028s, I believe they share the same mounting pattern. Hmmmmm...

Scott - some time ago, there was a discussion regarding finessing a saw into wood with a sharp chain versus the forcing it in with a dull one. This led to that, and eventually someone coined a new term for big spikes describing their unintended but inevitable use by homeowner/plebes as alternatives to sharening their chains. I can't recall the term, don't even know what to search for, but it was clever. I hope someone remembers this and posts a link to the thread.

Now I'm wondering......what is the purpose of the roller between the spikes? I've never seen that before.

chain catcher, upgrade from the 'luminiuminumunmiun one the saw came with.

Those have worked well enough the few times I have needed them, but I am not sure they would with longer chains....

it's just an 18 incher, I should be fairly OK with either one.

Funny thing, I was actually trial-fitting the set on the MS170 for a real "yuk-yuk" it's just happenstance that the Mighty MS290 was on the bench and I noticed the factory holes in the clutch cover for outboard spikes...

and no one noticed the snap-on clock on the wall? Odd. Very, very odd.

Thanks for the pics! Sure gives the saw a much more business-like look, and I like the idea of the roller chain-catcher. I've always liked the twin spike setups on my old 041's, so having it on my new Farm Boss seems like a natural. And the price ain't bad either!

I'm a tool freak too. It was the first thing I noticed in the 2nd pic. The 2nd thing was the makita banner. Where is your blue saw to go with it? lol.

Roller chain catchers are so much better than the aluminum ones...At least they can be used for more than one catch, if it ever happens.....
