Hello,
Can someone advise where I might begin to look for an ignition module for a Stihl 031....it's an old saw, and I think the module # may be MS290?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks

MS290 is a saw, not a module... and if you didn't mean that, they have different ignitions anyhow.

Do you have a points or electronic model 031?

I just replaced the module on a 114 dolmar. When I went to the dealer he said he would rather sell me an aftermarket module, because they work better and seem to last very well. The 15 dollar price tag helped to. It was a Atom ignition something or another and he said he puts alot of them on 020 and 031 stihls, but mounting on a 031 is tougher. I put the one on my 114 today in about 15 minutes and it started right up and runs great.

Ignition module for Stihl 031

Thanks for the prompt reply Lakeside...and sorry for the mistake. I have the electronic ignition, and the local dealer says he can no longer get the part??
Where do I start looking.....even after market that would work would be okay.
Thanks

Assuming we are talking about the tigger module, it is a currently available part. Have him check with Stihl by this part number:

1118 400 1001

The 031 ignition has 2 versions and several parts.

Coil - the same for both versions. Failure is rare.

Trigger unit basically replaces the points. Two versions:

- "Armature" trigger beneath the flywheel.
- External type (1118 400 1001) that mounts on the coil.

Apart from a bad lead to the plug, the most common failure (it is over 20 years old!) is the trigger units.

If you use the 1118 module, and you previously had the type beneath the flywheel, you will also need the stihl mounting bracket part number 1113 405 1901.

Search is a great feature of AS - Here's the results of "031 electronic" -

031 electronic module

I have recently acquired an 031 electronic with the same problem. The modules did have a problem with overheating. It's true the part is no longer available through Stihl and many other warehouses. All you have to do is what I'm doing right now and keep searching. There's one somewhere and for the quality of the saw it's worth persuing. I did replace the trigger switch on mine though I don't have the bag anymore for the part number. I believe mine started with a 1113 xxx xxxx. I can find out tomorrow as I work for a Stihl dealer. I think the part was around $60ish. I also replaced the switch and fuel hose.

I also can't remember but I think the standard ignition module was also NLA. Can't remember because I was set on keeping it electronic. As soon as I find one I will post that I did and where to get. Also my saw will be going up for sale after repaired. I didn't check yet if the part I put on fixed it so may be good to go tomorrow...in the perfect world. Will let you know what I find.

Where in Ky are you?

You all need any mechanics???

I need to work on my application/resume intro.

I usually walk into a dealer and say real loud, "You all looking for a good mechanic???"

When some one replies, "No!"

Then I say, "Well how about a chitty one? I swing both ways!!"

Mechanics

LOL. I'm working in Lexington in a very small operation. We have one certified tech and me. No work at my place but would try Central Equipment. And maybe Lexington Outdoor Power.

Also on a previous post, I wrote that I thought my trigger module was a 1113 but it was that 1114 number posted in a reply above mine. Good news, it fixed my saw. Anybody looking for a saw???

I grew up in Lexington, live down @ Bardstown now, I will drop by and say hi sometime soon...

Is Dan your Bryan rep now? They have been shuffling them a bit.

Fish

Yeah he is. Kinda funny. I started my job search in Bardstown and after nothing came up I come here.

Yeah. And no he doesn't. He was gone when I got there but he has been in since then.

I got family over that way. The job market brought me there from Wisconsin. Another funny thing, I'm also a musician. What instrument did he play?

If I remember correctly, he was a bass player, he played once for a band called " The Mighty Clique" a local white Reggae band.....

Right on. I play guitar myself but no band yet. I gotta run but I'll keep an eye out for ya. Good luck on the job search.
