Hello,
I have a Stihl 038 super which at the moment i have oregon 18" 1.6mm gauge 3/8 bar fitted on it, but wanted to get a spare longer bar (so should i ever pinch the bar, i can just unbolt & fit spare to get me out of trouble. & i also have access to a fallen tree with a big trunk)
I have always asumed chain sizes must remain constant, unless you change the sproket size to match - is this correct ?
Theres a 21" bar for sale in a local shop but its 404 chain size.
this is the first time i have ever come accross this size, & even though its 1.6mm gauge, i guess it would need a different sproket ?

Thanks for your patience

You will not be messing with anything 404. Your saw could not pull it. Anyway it is not a good combination. Yes your sprocket must match what you are using period. When you have more experience you might want to make some major trial run with some crazy combination. Many larger bars have large mount bolt patterns which will only fit larger saws. Some here have a spare bar with a chain for those rough moments and most agree that is a good plan. As for me never leave home with out spare every thing. Thanks

The way to go is a bar of correct mount & length of your choosing If the sprocket is not badly worn you will need a 3/8th x o63/1.6 bar of your choice (correct mount)& a corr#Dl chain of the the matching size.If sprocket wear is ok if you wish you can replace bar & chain with a same pitch ie. 3/8 but use 050/1.3 mm or 058/1.5 mm gauge bar/chain sprocket will work with any Std gauge 3/8 chain
