    Milling dead oak.

I owe a favor to one of my sons teachers who goes above and beyond for us. I own a grand burg mill. I have not really used it. He wants a 16x65x4 slab of oak. This is not oak country, I’m cutting wood in a place with a bunch of 12-14” white oaks. I finally found a dead one that’s over 16...

Stihl should be ashamed of themselves.

I’ve got to where I just remove it and tap it out after every fuel up. Ridiculous I know. Sucker sucks the dust right under it if you don’t keep it super clean and it’s not clean after sometimes as little as 2 tanks. Poor design allows for that to happen. And the endless tune makes it hard...

Stihl should be ashamed of themselves.

When I started cutting wood an 036 pro was about $400. Cord of wood $85 I think last time I was in a saw shop a 362 was $750 and a cord wood is $250. That math works out pretty much exact. Problem is at my day job and others with day job, pay has not Increased as well. I barely have the same...

Stihl should be ashamed of themselves.

I haven’t had to replace the clutch, but it’s the only saw I’ve ever run that had the HP to slip the clutch.

    8ten chain?

I ran some 8 ten yesterday. The factory edge is sharp and made a full cord (good for me). Would give a stihl chain a run for its money speed wise. I did have to stop and tighten the chains twice in initial run. If they pick up speed and hold an edge after I sharpen they will be good, I’ll put...

What kind of oak is this?

That’s what I was hoping it was. I guess blackjack would have been highest value. I think I’ll put this is some totes when I’m caught up on mesquite and save it for a cold front. Most of them are dead standing, rancher has been trying to control trees for some years. Not much oak firewood...

Lighting for felling, limbing, bucking, and milling

I’ve had some success with led head band things. Go lights and stuff. But you’ll never get good light. The biggest problem I’ve found is my eyes can see the wood chips, so I get stuff in my eyes. I’ve tried only splitting and stacking in dark, but then step on a rattlesnake usually and say...

What kind of oak is this?

I started cutting in a new place this week and have found a lot of these oak trees. What kind are they?

    8ten chain?

I’ve been really happy with the archer. But the rolls have doubled in price since I first tried it. I haven’t priced a roll of stihl chain yet, but I made 6 Loups Monday and finished off a roll. That will last me a month probably so I can decide what to do then.

    8ten chain?

I thought the archer was china too? I didn’t like it first time I tried it, but after you sharpen them a couple times they get narrower and cut nice and fast. Only complaint with archer is usually a new chain jumps off the sproket the first time you run it. Put it back on and it never happens...

    8ten chain?

This came from Amazon. I’ve not laid eyes on it yet. I think it will be here Friday. Had to get my bars off eBay. I kinda like hard chain like Stihl, but I’ve had great luck with archer that’s pretty soft. The stihl can handle a dip in dirt maybe twice a cord where archer is done when it...

    The nerve of some people

They were so bad last year I was carrying a pump up of tempo on my dump truck. Soon as I cut a load dose it good with tempo. When we got were it went. Tempo was dry safe to handle and no bugs.

    8ten chain?

Went to order my yearly supply today. I bought a 100’ of 3/8 .050 full chisel 8ten chain. It was pretty cheap like $225. I need to order a .058 and .063 roll, but didn’t want to order something I hadn’t experienced. Been running archer a lot, but it’s $100 higher. Anyone run this stuff?

Stihl should be ashamed of themselves.

The aluminum shavings are big enough I don’t need an aftermarket air filter to prevent them from entering under the bottom of the filter. Not many items you can cut with a saw and make more cash than the saw is worth in a half tank of fuel. But I would advise against the 500i for aluminum. I...

    Best firewood handling gloves

I wear mechanics gloves when it’s really cold outside. Otherwise no gloves. Your hands get used to it. But my wife won’t hardly let me touch her so there’s that. I’ve never been a glove fan though. I have big hands and always felt like the gloves restricted movement and made my hand and finger...

Good way to use up retired chains.

Clean pipe is .80/ lb here. Cast ends .40/lb. that load was 1600lb and change.

It’s fast too, about like a hardwood log same diameter.

Good way to use up retired chains.

Not bad at all on vibration. Noise is bad, you need good ear plugs and muffs. pay attention to where the chips are going, they hurt pretty bad. The 500i breaks the chains pretty bad. I broke 4-5 chains cutting that “load” . Mind you all worn out junk chains. Smaller saws don’t break the chains...

Good way to use up retired chains.

My brother makes Damascus stuff. I think it would be really cool to make an axe head from them.

Good way to use up retired chains.

These were the side roll irrigation systems. Thicker aluminum than flow line. They have a cast flange on each end that clamps to the next one. Most of this one was good and usable. But no one is interested in using them. I have 2 that I run, there is a pivot where this one sat. There’s some...
