    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

I visited the Best Made Co store today to check it out first hand. The store was very nice, friendly and full of wood, metal, and leather. The axes are beautifully finished. Truly a work of art. However, as a working tool they aren't for me. The Council Tool axe head is an in-betwen size...

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

This is my kindling and camp axe. It started life as a 2 1/4 lbs Collins Hunters axe I believe. I reshaped the entire axe to make it an excellent tool for splitting kindling, shaving tinder, and light splitting. The handle is white birch and has been tough, flexible, and shock absorbing.

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

here is my Arvika5 Star. I ground the cheeks so much that the stamping is fading at the edges. It's still a heave duty edge, but it is now a good all around axe. I can chop, split, and drive wedges with this.

    Splitting/Chopping Tool Review Thread

Nice job on re-profiling the Arvika. I have one and ground a lot of metal off it to make it a chopper instead of a splitter. They are very hard steel and it is a lot of work to do what you accomplished. I didn't scallop out the cheeks because I wanted to retain the weight. I replaced the...

    Chimney liner or stove pipe

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to install a 6 inch stainless liner. At the bottom, in back of the stove I will put a 90 degree elbow and a clean out so I can clean it from the bottom. The masonry chimney is about 17 feet above the roof and I don't want to go up there and work unless I...

    Chimney liner or stove pipe

Thanks for the replies. It is a straight run up from stove to cap. What is the functional difference between a stainless liner and a sheet metal stovepipe? I am not understanding how the stainless liner functions differently from the stovepipe.

    Chimney liner or stove pipe

I am putting a wood stove in my fireplace. The chimney is in good shape. It is 25 feet tall and has 19 inch inside diameter. Can I run regular sheet metal stove pipe inside the masonry chimney or do I need to use stainless chimney liner? How well does stainless liner clean out when you brush...

    Dot Split Event help

I am going to enter a Dot Split event this summer. I am only vaguely familiar with the rules. How many splits do you need to make? What is a good technique? I was thinking I would use my Arvika 5 Star axe. Thanks for the help.

Hults Bruk Arvika 5 Star Axe grinding

Thanks for those pics. That was exactly what I was looking for. You did a nice job grinding that. How does it cut compared to the Hytest? I use my 5 Star for training in hard, knotty, or frozen wood. Thanks again.

Hults Bruk Arvika 5 Star Axe grinding

Nice! Is that your axe? I am interested but wanted a pic looking down to see the profile of the edge. It could make a good axe for my son.

    Splitting Axe Comp at GTG

Testing splitting axes and a Man VS Man competition should be two different events: 1. Man VS Man splitting contest: you bring the tool you prefer and time how fast you can split three rounds. The splits have to fit through a measuring device like a hole in a piece of plywood. The wood is...

    Firewood stumpage price

How did your meeting with the landowner go? Did you end up making a deal to work the new woodlot?

Also, I like the saw box you have on the ROPS. I am going to make something like that. How did you connect it to the ROPS uprights?

    Firewood stumpage price

Being closer to home really is worth the price. You will cut more wood and make more money. I have a small Kubota for really low impact jobs and it is a lot of fun tooling thru the woods on it. I try to treat the landowner and his property with the greatest respect. I can always get a good...

    Firewood stumpage price

KJP, that is a nice little set up on your tractor and you are cutting lots of nice wood. Are you working right in Bolton? I lived in Waterbury Center for a while. I still do some tree work there and in Williston. Are you hauling logs home on your trailer? How much are you cutting?

    Firewood stumpage price

I use the NYS stumpage report linked to in a post further up for a guideline on what to pay the landowner. Right now I am paying $15 per cord for standing hardwood. By offering a fair market value for their property, following a thinning plan, laying out sensible roads, and by doing NO damage...

    Loose axe handle repair tips

The head on this Arvika 5 Star has been a PITA to hang. I got a good mount on it last year, but now it is loose again. I use the axe 4-5 days a week so it is to be expected, but it is a pain. Any suggestions for tightening the handle fit? I have a wedge in it, and the wedge is glued with...

    Dolmar 5105

I paid $464 including taxes for a 5105 with spare chain and pair of gloves. I have used the heck out of it doing line clearance and as a limbing saw. It has been an excellent saw.

    WINCH or PULLER?

I did a small job like this two winters ago. I had to bunch logs on the existing ATV trails and then skid them out. I used a small Kubota that fit on the ATV trails for the skidding. For bunching, I used a gas powered winch with a few different rope lengths. I also had a skid cone to help...

Most difficult time of the year: Firewood drying season

My wood is all cut, split, and stacked. Now comes the hardest part. Drying it. My favorite technique is to think about my woodpile for a few days, and then I go pick up a few pieces of wood. I hold them for a while, look at the checking, and then put them back on the pile. Firewood loves to...
