Bought a 262xp as a basket case, so far have replaced piston, ring, cylinder, magneto, crank bearings and seals, rebuilt carb, new 20" bar & chain, fuel line & filter, and lastly air filter and spark plug. I can't get the darn thing to run, it'll start and maybe rev up but then dies and wont restart. After that it's a real PITA to get to start and if it does it'll fire, idle high then die. Any ideas / advise would be great. Thank you.

What carb does it have, Walbro or Zama?
Sounds like the carb isn't adjusted properly.
Were you able to pressure test the saw?

Can you pull your muffler and post a picture? You definitely have a compression problem for a 262. As stated more than once, you need to vacuum check that case. Hope you get it worked out, 262's are nice cutting saws.

Make sure the flywheel key isn’t sheared, it’s an easy one to shear.

Shearing one will maybe allow starting, but it will run like crap, not idle, flood out, etc...

Quick and easy check is to pull plug, rotate till you see the piston at TDC, and see if the flywheel magnets are lined up with the coil.

Ok, well that was it. Took it apart and found that there was almost nothing left of the key and the crank slot was a little wallowed out. New fly wheel on the way (outch) pulled one off my buddy's saw and tried it, works great!! What a monster!!!
Thank you all.
