Greetings all!

Long time lurker, finally signed up.

I'm working on a Pro Mac 10-10 (16" original McCulloch bar) that has two (possibly related) problems.

pm10-10.jpgPM10-10B.jpg

The first is that I am finding fuel in the air box, mostly after having run the saw, but I think at least once just sitting in a warm garage.

I've ordered a new fuel line, fuel filter, air filter (it was caked up pretty bad) and a K10-SDC carb kit. It should all be here sometime next week. Is it likely that any of these could be related to the fuel in the air box? If not, any suggestions what else might be the culprit?

The other problem is that the fuel cap leaks if I turn the saw sideways or upside down. After finding Mark's (heimannm) post 372 in this thread about the fuel cap vent I think have know what is wrong. It appears my cap is missing all the vent bits (see picture). It also looks like the gasket could stand to be replaced, but first things first.

I've looked in the fuel tank, but don't see anything loose floating around. I then checked ebay and chainsawr for a replacement cap, but no luck. I'm moderately skilled at unorthodox fixes, and I saw some mention of a "fix" using a Homelite duckbill and a tire valve cap (modifiedmark, here), but I don't seem to be able to find an actual post with details. Any other creative ideas to get a functional vent on my current fuel cap, or a source for a replacement?

And FWIW - Even with these problems the saw runs like a beast. I took down a pear tree with it a couple weeks ago and that's when I noticed the problems.

Thanks for any help you can provide, the knowledge here is really amazing.

Mark

I suspect a new fuel line will fix the pooling problem. 2 strokers seem to have a blow-back problem and that might be the cause also.. Surprised you can't find a cap. MAC only made about 10 million of these. Only 9 1/2 million still on the road..

As far as fuel in the air box. Two likely culprits could be a leaking metering needle that will allow fuel past. The other could be a hole in the fuel line. Pressure test the fuel line to check of that's the cause before you replace it. The carb kit and a good cleaning should fix the metering needle if that's the issue.

Wow!

Thanks for all the suggestions. Life with three girls is busy, so I probably won't get a chance to tinker until the weekend.

Beetlejuice - I've only found a couple on fleabay, and most of them appear to be missing the vent part as well. Also checked with Randy (randysenginerepair), he told me he didn't have any new or used 10-10 fuel caps. I did manage to find one here, sourwould had a pile of 10-10 parts that I snapped up.

fossil - Thanks, I don't have a pressure tester (yet), but the carb kit showed up yesterday.

heimannm - I saw that suggestion in another thread, definitely going to give it a try.

I'll look in my stash, (junk pile). I should have something that fits the bill.

I just picked up another 10-10 last night. Is there any other way or any other numbers other than the tag by the carb to tell what it is? I ask because it's got a black "10-10 Automatic" airbox cover/tank, however it has a throttle handle with operator presence lever and a red on/off switch. Also the saw has a chain brake side cover with brake handle removed. Model # in airbox is 600002g with a 15 serial # prefix. My other 10-10 Auto is 600002u with 13 prefix and looks to be correct for age.

So is the saw I just picked up a newer saw with an older tank switched onto it or an older saw with newer handle and side cover switched onto it? Another thing I noticed is my older 10-10 has a round mounting boss on cylinder above muffler while this new saw I just picked up it is square shaped.

I have a 10-10 as you describe with the OPL and red stop switch. Hard to say if yours is all original or if someone has swapped some parts around. I tried to compile a list of different model numbers assigned to the 10-10 models and came up with 14 model numbers plus all the letter variations, there may in fact be more...

Would the 2 "E" S stand for Electric start?

Yes, there were 3 or 4 models with electric start depending on how you count them.

3-10E
5-10E (70cc)
10-10E, S10-10E

The "Super" designation was not always significant with McCulloch the S250 being the notable exception.

You sir are a wealth of information

....ways to tell them apart, like numbers on the motor or something.

That approach has often given rise to more questions than answers over the years with various models..., including original numbers being crossed out or stamped over in favor of other numbers depending on what was actually bolted to the engine itself. The yellow fun just never ends!

Starting to accumulate a few of these saws. Now I'm curious, are the 57cc variants noticeably stronger than the 54cc saws? I'm curious since I'm looking at maybe grabbing a decent pm55, although the price is a little more than I think it's worth.

New to the site. Love the 10-10 saws. Just picked up a 10-10a black air filter cover for $30. Little carb cleaning and proper adjustment, she's a ripper. Pictures of my go to saw, Pro 10-10a that pulls a 28" bar almost as well as my MS440

Pic of the new one. Going to try and salvage the chain tonight. Dressed the bar last night. New carb kit will be here Wednesday. Folks I picked it up from said it was her dads and they couldn't get it going.

Mark, do you still have some of those full wrap bars? Was going to try to bend some up using 1/2" EMT until I saw your post

0AEC3B70-BA5B-49CB-AFDD-31AEEB0DECB6.jpeg Do these old 10-10 have bar guide plates on them? My grandfathers never had any and was wanting to know if I should install one or two? Also are there any air filters available for these old 10-10? Could not find any on fleabay.
