Tom - I use a ball hone to break the glaze in a cast iron or steel liner, I like to do this job with the saw thin the parts washer and the solvent

flushing through the bore.
Thanks mark. I am going to do teardown this week and inspect piston etc. Then off to ebay for rings or piston whichever is needed.

Josh - remove the three screws from the starter cover and give it a couple extra wraps in the counter-clockwise direction.

Picked this one up a couple weeks ago. $30, it's a runner with fresh fuel and a little prime. Needs a bar and chain and a chainbrake band

levis - The 10 Series McCulloch saws are piston ported and you will not see the piston rings when looking through the intake port, the rings are only visible through the exhaust port on the PM800 and related 10 Series McCulloch saws.

On piston ported saws, the rings are visible through the exhaust port when the piston moves down to open the exhaust:

On the intake side, the piston skirt closes the intake port except when the piston is near TDC (Top Dead Center) when the skirt moves past the port, allowing atmospheric pressure to push the air/fuel charge into the low pressure in the crankcase. In the photo below, if you look very carefully you can see the bottom of the piston skirt and the connecting rod through the intake port.

This You Tube video depicts a piston ported engine although I have never seen one with the exhaust and intake on the same side as they show.

Picked up this 10-10 the other day thinking it was a Pro Mac 10-10 but after looking at that model and serial number it looks to be a Pro 10-10 (a) with a mod #600013U.

But it had a filter cover the was for a Pro Mac 10-10

Could it be that it just doesn't have the correct filter cover? Any major difference between a Pro 10-10 A vs Pro Mac 10-10? Reason being it needs a few things to get it back working and I just need to be sure I'm buying the right parts based off of serial number. Compression was only 90 and it wasn't wanting to start so I'm going to replace rings don't think I need to replace piston though. What do you think?

Also it's missing the gas tank gasket so replacing that and going to give it a carb kit also.
 
A couple of new additions. Can't help but love what appears to be waterbed plumbing in the oil tank. Seems to be a drain adapter..., which is actually a good idea for these saws to empty the tank for bench work or whatever. Think I'll keep it handy just for that reason! This should clean up respectably. Has great compression and nice blue spark but leaks like crazy at the fuel tank entrance to the carb box and will need a new line if the Teflon tape trick won't seal it. Tank seam is tight. Will be fun getting acquainted with the Mac carb..., LOL.

Then..., this came along on a tip from a friend (@old 040). Missed the ad myself and he alerted me to to it. I couldn't get there fast enough. This thing almost smells new. Pops on first pull, starts on second. Very low hours.

O. K. I must chime in.. You got the Father's day YOU SUCK award... Dat der is be a purdy saw...
 
I think it's gonna be a display saw now that it's all cleaned up. Pulled covers and found evidence of quite a bit of use. Fortunately someone took very good care of it during its operational life. Tuned up real nice and runs like a top. Put the bar from my SP81 on it for one final photo op last week. LOL

I have a PM55 and a 555 not in nearly as nice of shape to satisfy my 57cc itch when it strikes. Both need a little work but are runners. Also just recently scored a real nice PM 10-10 that only needed a starter rope to make it a runner. Creative muffler "baffle" solution on the PM 55. I'll try to get a pic of later.

I'll certainly keep that in mind, Mark. Thanks. I have several parts carcasses that I need to take stock of and get organized. There may be one in any number of my boxes of 10-10 if I look hard enough. May even have a whole assembly if the threads are stripped in the one that's on it.
