Can someone help me identify what type of tree this is?
Magnolia has leaves like those. But California has all kinds of trees I don't know, so someone from there needs to weigh in.
Not magnolia...it has opposite leaf arrangement. Not saying I know what it IS - like you said, CA trees are not easy to ID from the rest of the Country!
Maybe Almond tree?
... this is the first time I've seen you stumped (pun intended )
Can you post more photos of the entire tree, roots and bark?

I have two guesses, depending on how large the fruit is:
Most likely a variety of coffee plant?
Does it have white flowers and does the green fruit turn red? How big is the mature fruit?
