Hey guys, maybe we could start the season off with a fun thread.

It's time to clean the workbench off when you set a fresh beer down in the only bare spot, go check the oil on the splitter, only to return and not be able to find the beer.

What say you gentlemen, what does it take for you to clean off the workbench?

I'll bet avalancher has a nutty customer buried somewhere.

...when I have no more room on the workbench to shift unfinished projects to make space for the current one.

I guess I'll break down and finish a good lot of them, but I'll definitely need to make another beer run.

The calendar on the wall says 1987 because that was the last time you were able to get close enough to it to change it.

The stuff on your workbench has been sitting in one spot for so long it is now on the national historic register

you build another workbench somewhere else in the garage because it is less labor intensive than cleaning off the old one

when the legs start to bow out and the center bows down

you have a can of your favorite beverage on your workbench and the can has their original logo on it

You still have the owners manual for the car you sold 10+ years ago sitting on your bench

You have slowly replaced every tool you have because you have lost them in the abyss err I mean on your workbench

I could go on but I will give someone else a chance to amuse us

When it takes you more time to clear enough space for a tear-down, as the tear-down itself!

Well, i just recently did it...my whole garage was a cluster F including the workbench...i couldnt/didnt want to go in there to work on anything it was so annoying because i couldnt find anything i needed. SO, i cleaned the whole freaking garage...yeah that took some time. Then i built some shelves...and i have storage for everything now. Its SO nice to walk in now and have room on the bench (and floor for that matter) to work on something. Now i just walk down there to go in and sit its so nice!

Guess it isn't time for me to clean the workbench yet, the manual on the back corner is from a car sold 7 years ago. Seriously it is....

But I have a small excuse, I have been tearing the garage apart to remove insulation that got wet this past spring during some flooding. But winter is coming and I am going to finish it up in the next couple of weeks. The lower level of the house is in paint right now, then comes the garage.

Anyone want a repair manual for an early 90s jetta, probably covers others too. Only got wet once... But you can still read it, just some of the pages are wrinkled.

:agree2: Sometimes I find 2-3 of the same tool after I clean... Figure Buddy X borrowed it but they were burried in the mess...

This post is worth a rep!

Time to clean when the wife says "I needed to borrow a screwdriver, so I cleaned up your workbench a little bit. Threw out all those nuts and bolts that were laying by that old saw..."

just wish I could do something about the black hole under my work benches. If i drop something ( especially small items)and it goes under bench it will never be found ..I think small items vaporize before they hit the floor.

And to think I'm sitting here on AS right now, because I don't want to go out and tidy up the shop, even though that's exactly what I told my wife I'd be doing today. Thanks for the guilt trip, y'all. Now I gotta get off my lazy duff and do the job. :)

Oh well. I'll feel much better when it's all done. Just wish I had a bigger shop.

Hey, there we go - let's make this thread even better - post photos of your shop!:clap:

Clean the workbench?

That's your estate's responsibility after you die.

I've done 2 kinda that way recently, my dad's (into a retirement home) and my father-in-laws (into a nursing home). It is amazing how easy it is to clean up (empty) someone else's shop, just about a half day each. I can stand and stare at mine for an hour and still not know where to start!

Keep a full oil drain pan under the bench...EVERYTHING will fall into that.

After collecting tools for MANY years I have several sets of the important things like screwdrivers and socket sets. When I can no longer find a screwdriver or 10mm socket in my toolbox it is time to clean the workbench.

How did I miss this gem of a thread the first time around?

...when you decide the only option is to build a new workshop, as all your sheds and garage are so full of cra...err stuff that you have nowhere to move it to clean the existing space without getting rid of some of your good stuff.

The question is, how do I avoid using the new shop for things like parking cars, tractors, and lawn mowers and keep this space for my stuff?
