Assuming a seasoned mixed hardwood stack, it is worth:

$514 of LP
$430 of heating oil
$454 of electricity
$281 of natural gas

So a cord of hedge should be worth about twice that. :msp_smile:

Are those numbers for JUST the product, or include all the add-on charges that power and fuel companies tack onto the end of their bill?

Just fuel. found an average price per unit and used this table. http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/techline/fuel-value-calculator.pdf page 2.

I'll have to check. We have NG for cooking and back-up heat. I haven't looked at the current rate for a while. We don't use much.

Watching the gas company "sneak" onto my property about twice a year to make sure their meter is still attached and working is priceless.

My 5to6 cord are worth 2500.00$ ,that's what my lp bill for 12 months when down 4 years ago

Yep, got to love seeing the foot prints in the snow when they send the gas guy out to make sure you have not by-passed their meter.
4 times last season that I know about, and mine has the electronic sender on it, and they replaced that twice also last season.

Haha, I can relate. I think I have the newest meter on the street. My best was about this time last year, I have a large covered front porch, which as luck would have it, fits one cord real nice. Me and my son were just finishing stacking on the porch, when a young fellow showed up in a gas truck to "check" the meter. I spoke cordially to him for a bit and asked why my meter is always of such concern to his employers. He explained that I hardly use any gas at all and that the computer models show that I'm at about 1/16 of where I "should be" for this area. He then looked at the stacks of wood on the porch and asked if I heat with wood. I casually replied that the wood was from a tree that's usually in the front yard, but we take it down each year to put the nativity set up. I explained that the wood was all numbered and that we will put it back up in the spring. :bang:

This year they will be adding to the propane tanks out back. The weather has been wacky enough here that trying to run the stove has been not worth the trouble for the most part.

That and my wife's job that keeps us both out until 7:30pm most nights.

The extra money is nice though.

I called for the LP tank to be topped off awhile back and they came back with " you haven't bought any since 2008 ". I said" well if you hadn't made me mad you might have sold more to me." They then told me they were down sizing my tank from 500 to 125 gallon and if I didn't use at least 100 gallons a year they would charge me $100 a year for rental. So they changed it out and said that I still had propane in the big tank and that I would recieve a credit when I ordered the next time so I am good for a year and then I'll have to rethink the whole thing over. I sure do love my hardy. haha:msp_sneaky:

The average price of LP in Iowa is $1.35 per gallon right now, in North Carolina it's $2.65, and in New Jersey it's $3.45... three times higher than Iowa.
So... How much is that cord worth?

You can find your own tank to buy if you look around. Then get it filled and be done with it, have a good long term stash.

My story is similar, except I called for my summer fill a few years ago and when I got my bill it was 2 times what it should have been. I called and the L.P. guy told me that I already had my summer fill in Feburary and that this was the new rate for L.p. for the year. I felt I got screwed with no notice about the rising cost so I went out and bought an OWB and have not looked back!

ya I got low one time and still owed them $200 and mind you I had them for years as a supplier and they told me that until they recieved the money that I would not get any propane. Now so that you don't think that I was a dead beat I had perfect credit and still do and I had even mailed the money out that morning in which I had told them. I told them that this would be the last time that they would be able to put me in this spot. So here came the hardy and out went their bills. I still get a chuckle when I think back hearing them say " you ain't bought any since 2008. ":msp_tongue:

Ha ha, so true. I'm only a couple months into owning a fireplace insert but I called the gas co. last week and asked if they're estimating or reading. They read every month so we're good on the estimating front.

Definitely have to adjust for different regions. I haven't run our Nat gas furnace in 3 years so this may be slightly dated but our average gas bill was around 85 a month in winter. Highest I ever had was 140, after a week or 2 of sub zero temps. Have a 2400 sf split level , usually kept it at 65. Closed the vents in basement cause we rarely use it except the laundry room. Since the wood was installed the house is 75 , the wife is happy and I get to enjoy my saws & woodcutting.
