I have been cutting wood for about 15 years now. I finally got an insert for our house. A Pacific Energy. We cut down a couple of ash trees. Real monsters and split them. I think we have about 2 cords. How many cords would I need to have stacked for late october through late april?

I have a Dutch West insert that I've been using for 2 1/2 years. I burn about 6 cord of hardwood a year. Two of my friends also burn wood...one has the same insert I do and the other has a Jotol stove. They also burn about 6 cord a year. We're located in north central Ct. and southern western Mass.

I'm just taking a wild guess here but, if I were you, I'd plan on using about 6 cord a year....:)

There are a lot of variables here. How big is the house? How well insulated? How tight are the windows? How warm do you like it?

I doubt 2 cords of ash is going to get you through, though.

Full Cords or Face Cords?

The term "Cord" varies from region to region.
Around here a "Cord" is a Face Cord, and not a full Cord.

My uncle put in a quadra fire late last fall, November I think. He only burned about a cord and a half from November till now heating a little over 1,000 sq. ft. I couldn't believe it!!! Sure made me want to have one after burning about 10 cord!!

Stack up some of that wood Steven, when you get it 4 ft high, 4 ft wide & 8 ft long, you've got a cord of wood - Sometimes you think, boy thats a big pile - When it gets stacked there's not as much there as you thought. If you're going to get 'in the woodburning business', you might as well learn how much you really have. I burned almost 7 full cord this past winter, heat & hot water for a 3400 sf house though.

The only heat I have is wood so when it gets cold my insert goes 24-7. I go through 6-8+ full cords per year. I have a 2700sf house but only use about 1500 of it in the winter. can maintain 80* if I want.

+1 Not unless you don't mind being cold for two thirds of the winter after you run out of wood.

Most everyone here at AS, even from the locations that have "face cords", refer to a cord as 128 Cu. Ft. and a third of a cord as a face cord.

No, a cord is 128 cubic feet. Period. In some places, people are ignorant of this legal reality.

I agree. A FULL Cord should never be confused, or described as anything other than a FULL Cord, no matter what part of the world one is located. A FACE Cord is 1/3 of a FULL Cord, period.

1 FULL Cord = 4' x 4' x 8'

Around here they call a face cord "A Rick" (Why? I have no figgin Idea) it does cut down on confusion though, A rick is just one row, 4'x8'x20" another thing they have here is a "Pig Pile" Hah, it's just 18 pieces stacked 3 pieces then 3 pieces at a 90*and repeat till you have 18, sells for $20. Thats why I cut my own.

Of course I love to cut firewood, but the way I'd look at it, is cut as much as you can within reason for the first season. That way you won't run out, and you can keep track of what you need for reference next season.

I burn about 3.5 cords of oak and ash, heating 2600 square feet. My home is well insulated and very tight, but I live in a much warmer region than you.

*shrugs*

I know of a guy in northern Vermont that heats with an Eko 40 gasifying boiler... hot water, 3000+ sq ft (well insulated) home and a hot tub that goes through about 4.5 cords in an average year.
