Alright, here I go again, getting another Stihl. If you don't know already I have run Husky/J-red my whole life, but have been trying Stihl as of this year, and really like some models.

So here is my new dilema. I can get the last 440 on the shelf or a new 460.

I bought a used 460 as my first Stihl rearhandle saw and after a slight learning curve and trying different stuff, I am now completely confident in the saw. For instance, I put on the dual port muffler, messed with the carb, tried different bar combinations, different dogs, and put on other new parts.

Another thing is I have had to change dealers, which my Husky dealer was great, but the new dealer offers much more.

Buying Stihl stuff is really different for me and getting used to the feel, engineering, controls and all the in's and out's has been something, since I have come from the mindset that "Stihl doesn't compare to the Swede saws." Well I am slowly finding that not to be the case at all. I know Swede saws can cut like mad, but I am growing more concerned about the quality, and longevity.

As far as the saws go, I think it would be cool to get the last 440 on the shelf, but have no experience with them and am concerned about stock power. Was wondering what others think about giving up some power to save weight between these two.
The weight and handling of the 440 is nice.

So which one, 440 or 460? I will be buying on monday, so come on Stihlheads, someone push me over the edge! Thanks for listening.

MS440 FTW!

second best saw stihl evermade.

not sure why i like it better than the 460 but there must be something to it.

460

More power with just a bit more weight. Then port the thing and watch the chips really fly.

If you didn't already have a 460, I would recommend that, but since you already have one, I would go for the 440. You should still be able to get a new 460 within the next year or two, the 440 on the other hand is a different story.

The 460 will have a slighter edge with the longer bar. If you want to keep a 20"-25" on the 440, it is sweet! Get the dual port cover, that also fits the 460 and tune the carb. You will be very happy...........

What size bar??

I have both and can say I really like the 044 with an 8-pin and a 20" bar. It works fine with a 24 and a 7-pin also but to tell the truth when I need the 24 I go for the MS460. Mostly because the 24 is already on the saw, but it does pull it much better and pulls the 8-pin about like the 044 pulls the 20"/8-pin.

If your gonna run a 28" definitely the 460.

But then again you already have a 460 so I say get the 440.

Just my .02

Looking at your saw lineup, you've got mid-large saws out the wazoo. You have absolutely no NEED for either one...so..... you really just WANT one... and that's ok.

My advice is to pick the one that makes you tingle with happiness. For me, that would be a 440. The 046/460 feels like it crosses a weight threshold between a "daily driver" and a specialty saw. You'd think the Giant wouldn't care, eh?. A 440 would make a great firewood saw (its still overkill for the wood I cut, though) and a 046/460 would be a bit goofy for such a use... a bit like taking a big rig to the store for a quart of milk. Apologies in advance to those of you who drive your big rig to the store for milk.

Of course, if you have no legitimate use for the saw and it just sits there... you'll get to keep it in nice shape for a long, long time. Maybe that's somethig to consider.

Many westerners run 32 inch bars on 044's in softwoods....just don't try that with a stock 440 with the horribly restricted muffler....I've never run a fully woods ported one, just a Masen's modded one, with an opened muffler. It was nice!

Great saws, lighter than a 372, a tad less power, but more vibration...which never bothered me!

I'd buy the 440.

You already have the 460.

The lighter weight of the 440 with a 20 in. b&C would be really nice up in the tree for trunk wood !

441

I see that there was one "advice" given on this particular saw...curious as to why. I'm not to familiar on the Stihl line-up yet and would like to know how it compares to the 440 & 460 other than what the paper specs say...actual use comparisons

Had a 440 sold it, bought a 660, but have run the 460. Would take the 460 any day, especially with a 24 in hardwood!:chainsaw:

Well, I still don't know which, but I know one thing for sure, I will not be buying a 441. Not interested in the new strato engine. I think I would like the 440 for the reasons mentioned and the 460 I know is great. I want to put a 20" on one and a 24" on the other, cutting 90% hardwoods. Will the 440 bring good money if I don't like it and want to sell?
