I was just reading the Carlton Manual http://www.sawchain.com/images/complete book.pdf. They have an interesting theory about depth gauges. They state that the depth of the depth gauge setting should change as the cutting edge of the tooth is filed back. According to them it could change from 0.027" to as much as 0.045". Does anyone out there believe or follow this method?

Yep

Yes, it's true. I simply use a Craftsman protractor-like tool with the Simington 451A depth gauge attachment. New chain reads 70 degrees across tip of cutter to top of depth gauge when fitted into the jig (the true angle is only a few degrees when the chain is mounted on a bar). I maintain that 70 degrees throughout the life of the chain. The depth gauge is far lower than .25 when the chain is nearly scrap.

Look at the cutter, the height gets lower as you follow the top plate back.

Kind of like the round earth theory, I still don't buy that one.............

chain filing

for a few people it may be true. from my experince take two light swipes off a new chains riders. after 6 files take one swipe off the riders, then repeat til chain no good. i have some chains i only filed the riders once and the chain is still cutting just fine. it really depends on what you want your chain to cut like. factory settings are there in black and white for two reason one liability and as a guide for :newbie: :greenchainsaw:
just my rant of the day

Here is the illustration from the Carlton Manual showing how the tooth pivots on the backside. I am just curious why Stihl and Oregon do not go along with this concept.

My guess is that they do.

It's simple geometry...although the pivot point (the rivet) doesn't move, the cutter edge above it does, so the relationship between cutter edge and rivet does move. In order to make up for that, the raker has to be shortened much more in order to allow the cutter to get up into the wood and get the same-size chip as before.

Sorry Fish, I didn't mean to offend you and your opinion. I just wanted an opinion from someone who is close to Stihl and their policies. All other opinions are certainly welcome and treated equally.

I am not sure I agree with the Carlton theory 100%. There are other factors which prevent, the tooth from pivoting on its heel. For example as the tooth is filed back, the fulcrum becomes shorter and less of a turning moment results from wood contact. Also chain tension would be a factor here. If many teeth are cutting at the same time, the tension would prevent the teeth from pivoting and shortening the overall effective length of the chain. It would be interesting to see a video of a worn chain to see how much pivoting actually takes place.

I sent the question to the Stihl technical center and received a useless common knowledge reply. No one wants to address a technical question. I am sure there are reasons for not using the progressive method. I am sure there is someone on this forum that can answer my question.
