hi Carl, I see you found a bunch of my stuff in those links. My current inventory, not including doubles is, lightning, contra lightning S, contra lightning GS "clone". 070,090, 090AV, 090G.. I also have a huge library of literatchure . aka, knucklehead.

can you post a pic of that filter sock? I still dont know if the dealer or stihl supplied that sock.

I'm trying to catch up with you in the old Stihl collection but know I never will and if I even came close I would be divorced...

Sorry if it sounded like I had one of the socks for the filter. I had just noted the one saw with one and had the same questions you do about their originality.

Those are great Darius Kinsey photos...Originals, yes? And of family members. WOW! He was one of the greatest photographers ever. His work has never been matched by any other including Jackson and Curtis. Wow, would I love to have some of his originals!

must be the one I just bought tonite after I looked at my blk piston:D

he had 3, I grabbed 2. did the rings look good on the one you got?

I also bought one of those some time back if anyone needs one....I don't think I need a BLK.

:ices_rofl: Haw...Don't you wish. Nope I've got one of the pistons being talked about and I have no intention of building a BLK out of NOS - starting with a piston.

when I saw that e link I remembered I had a piston-cylinder that came with my blk 57. If it did not fit the 58mm contra and was a stihl it had to fit something..

so I went out yesterday and found this piston and took pic. looked it over and then bought 2 that the guy had..

you can find lots of these saws in deutschland but not to common here.

they were sold in the USA though.

Carl, Not sure but the guy's in DE may not be able to find those pistons and it might be a hot commodity over there..

about those kinsey pics. I had seen the ones we have years ago but untill I bought a few kinsey books I never put the 2+2 together.
Kinsey had taken many family photots and of my great gampa's logging operations.. 1897-1903. kinda cool huh?

Great promo brochures. Don't tell me you have an ESL also?

I guess I need to start keeping my eyes out for a BLK. I really like the looks of it and of course the history. Gotta love the name "Blitz". Surprised they used that name after WWII. I haven't been searching the DE site for BLK auctions. Now I will.

Yeah that's how Kinsey made his living - photographing individuals and families in the logging industry and selling directly to them. He was welcomed at all the logging camps and got special attention because he sold directly to the individual loggers and operators. He never sought out the publishers or salon business.

Maybe we should start a Darius Kinsey logging pics thread?

This could be the end of you Carl ! There will be no stopping you if you go for a BLK ! I have three, the "new" one that has only been run by myself and I got one along with my Contra AV which came with most of it's military gear and transport box also one in parts. Belgian has a couple of nice ones and I think the brush cutter attachment.

So how about you or Belgian posting a video?:clap::clap:

Isn't this the one you posted a pic of at one time?

Piston, rings & muffler pics and questions

Here are a few pictures I took of the new contra last weekend.

I'm wondering what ya'll think of the piston and rings on this saw. They look nearly new to me, with only slight discoloration and carbon buildup on the top of the piston. However, the groove on the piston at the top running down to the two rings has me perplexed. Is this normal for a Contra/Lightning piston? Is this an original Stihl or aftermarket?

Then there is the muffler. Looks like someone broke the bolt holes trying to get it off or back on? Can you think of a purpose for this? Do I need a new one or is there some way to repair this one?

It also doesn't have a muffler gasket so has blow-by. Anybody got a muffler gasket? All in all the saw runs pretty strong after I discovered that the plastic carb fuel filter cap wasn't attached firmly and was leaking pressure/gas. I still haven't gotten it tuned to my satisfaction but the wife was looking over my shoulder impatiently.

It also has an after market starter cover. Anybody heard of Fairbanks Morse & Co. Chicago, Ill after market parts for Contras/Lightnings?
