I have several gnarly rounds to cut up for firewood tomorrow. But I'll make sure to make some time as I'm eager to sharpen the chain on the 5100 also.

I'll be honest. I feel a lot better as a firewood cutter now...And Al is right as my porting is taking advantage of it. I'm cutting up those rounds kinda quick now. Less work on the back is always a good thing

They are a little tricky to figure out becasue the instructions SUCK, I just happened to see a Baileys flyer with a photo of a guy using it and though Damn thats how it's done...LOL I would still like to know if I'm using it correctly for the rakers

Yeah, I figured out pretty quickly how to sharpen the cutter but it took a while to find a picture of how to use the depth gauges. Those instructions do suck but a great little tool.

But they aren't, that's the beauty of the FOP.

I have the Stihl and Oregon guides that clamp onto your round file, the Oregon/Precision Tooling filing jig that clamps onto your bar and Oregon depth gauge jigs and the FOP beats them all IMO.

The Husky roller guide looks good, but I've only played with one enough to show someone else how to use it (they couldn't work it out ) and the depth gauge/guide that TZ250 often posts pics of is good too.

Quick, easy and accurate and a better way to do depth gauges.

It's a simple piece of flat metal, that does the same thing as a collection of machined parts and fasteners, with moving parts to wear out and become inaccurate.

It costs what? 2 bucks?

I wonder if someone would mind posting pictures from above, of a filoplate being used to set the left and then the right hand side rakers. I'm writing an article for a wood working club newsletter about how to hand file chains and would like to include a few details and pics of alternate ways of setting rakers including using a filoplate but I don't have one.

If the article turns out Ok I'll post it here as well.

Best I could do fellas.

The most important part I missed to point out was to follow the angle of the file-o-plate's side edge that is angled. If you'll notice, one side of the fop has a 90º edge while the other side's edge has a 30º angle. Follow that angle on your strokes. I'm not sure why I was thinking 10º. But the filing angle is 30º and it's stamped on the fop:monkey:.

Looks good.

But I like the Husky combi gauge better, I think it works a little nicer, and its faster, it also holds the file at the 10deg tilt as well. It works real slick, but it is a few more $$$ then the File-o-Plate.

Good tutorial Rick, This should be sent to Carlton so they can see what a good set of instrution are. Thats how I use the plate also, so if your doing something wrong so am I.

Frank, they got to be the worst instructions. I'm sure there are more folks like you and me that figured out how to use it thanks to the Bailey's catalog If I hadn't seen that catalog, that plate will still be in the package.

37509 is the #on the plate for round chisel.37504 for semi. both of these are .375 plates. I,m not holding on any .325 stuff but it won't be a problem too find. Oh, the 3/8 low profile plate is 36504 I,m pretty sure I can go look or someone can correct me

Here's how i set depth guages, with a piece of glass and feeler guages. This way you can pick if want your rakers set at .020, .025, .030, whatever works best...........you want the glass to cover at least 3 cutters......
