Ok I am hoping for some Insight here from you pros in the chainsaw world. I am thinking of going with either a 372 XP or the 357XP I am curious why the 357XP doesn't get more love in the chainsaw world. It seems guys love the Stihl MS361 or the 372XP and the 346XP and the stihl 460 but noone seems to give the 357XP the legendary status afforded those other saws. IS there something I am missing about the 357XP?

Some carb issues may have dinged it's rep a little, and it is bookended by two great saws so it gets overlooked. I'm keeping my eye out for a used 357/359. Saw a nib 357xp non-etech leave the store yesterday.

If you're going with more than one, get the 372 now and a 346 later

I just picked up a 359 that had been run over, should have it all back together tonight. Looks to be a very nice saw, all the same design as the 346/372. I'll try to post a video of it this weekend....

Kool ! What was it run over by? How badly?

The guy said his truck with the wife driving....

Saw really wasn't hurt too bad, only thing I had to replace was the top cover and fuel tank, looks more like they used it as a wheel chock. LOL!!!

Awfully expensive wheel chock! I gotta hand it to Husqvarna they make a durable saw. I have been a Stihl guy for while now and i may be buyin a new Husky. Just gotta figure out which one. Its a tuff choice i cut everything from 8" hardwoods to 30" pines and hardwoods lot of diversity around here.

372 is seemingly gonna be a good option. WHat kind of Carb issues did they have?

Some of the earlier ones shipped with Walbro carbs that had issues. They swap them out for Zama's if there is a problem. Not all saws were affected. I have one of the 'bad' carbs and I've never had a problem with mine.

yeah the weight of the 357/359 is definately nicer especially since Stihl has built the 362 which is a bit heavier/bulkier. Thanks, the search goes on for a new saw.

i don't know the actual weight of the 362. from what i understand, the mfg spec weight of the 361 was pretty close to the actual weight. i do know the actual weight of a 357/359 is 13lbs. if the 362's actual weight is close to the spec weight, i would go for a 362 over a 357/359. the lighter weight of the 361 is one of the main reasons it is favored over the similarly spec'ed 357.

Video as promised...

Stihl had a very good tradition of true weight specs on their pro saws until the 441 came out, but then it was game over......:censored:

I have seen no evidence on the MS362 weight yet, but the added bulk is there, regardless if the weight spec is true.....:givebeer:

Another note, the 359 really doesn't belong in this discussion, as it isn't a pro saw.

Regarding the 357xp, it had an auto decomp for some years, that failed occationally and contributed to a somewhat ragged reputation on here, as well as the carb issues that appeared later.

The 357xp will be replaced by a new "strato" design any time now - the specs that have leaked out looks somewhat impressive, but it remains to be seen if they are true......

In my area, the husky 357 never really got a lot of love cuz back in the day when husky was still selling pro saws online, you could buy a 372xp for about the same price as a 357xp. I was kind of a no brainer. Even at the dealers, the price difference was slight and nobody around here stocked the 357xp. It wasent until about a year ago that I actually saw one of these things at a dealer. Poor orphans don’t get any attention. Take one home today!!

Cage, I bought the 357 before I found this site and before I came down with CAD, good saw, have cut a fair bit of firewood with it.

Now I have a 372 and a 346 OE, among others. If you are going with a "one saw plan" for sure, then the 357 is a good choice (or Stihl 361 from what I read here). However, as others have said, and especially knowing CAD will get you sooner or later, may as well plan ahead for at least a 2-saw plan: 346 + 372 would be a good one.

The quality and design of the cylinder + the resulting rather low power output for a 59cc saw.

:greenchainsaw:

So the 359 is that much less power than the 357XP? The way i figure it is why would Husky make two nearly identical saws if they truly were that close in performance wouldnt they just make the one model? The 357XP must be a more powerful saw than the 359.:monkey:

Right, they are far from close in performance.

There many are stories about impressive 359s though, but those are about more or less modded saws.

The logic behind the 359, 353, 365, 336, 334T and 570 is to hit a lower "non-pro" price point with a high quality product, without creating a different basic design - basically the same as with older Ranger/Farmer/Practica models.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think there is that much difference in price between the two...
