Thinking of Modifying Your Equipment?
Think Again!
While it may be tempting to tweak your chain saw to get more power, modifications like this for normal operations are dangerous, expensive, illegal and a deal-breaker for warranties. So before you attempt those modifications, here are some things to remember:
Power modifications often result in increased noise level,
which can be a violation to ANSI and OSHA standards.
The increased exhaust emissions can result in the
chain saw falling out of EPA and CARB requirements.
Alterations can create a fire hazard by changing the spark
arrestor system, allowing for the interaction of heated exhaust
gasses with highly combustible material.
Being caught with illegally modified equipment could
pose serious legal and financial risks.
Alterations to chain saws void manufacturer warranties
and decrease their longevity.
Trust the experts at STIHL to chain saw design. They
deliver a product that gives you the power you need while
meeting legal and safety requirements.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were folks from the major saw manufactures searching sites like this for honest feedback.

If they built them to run real good and have decent exhuast outlets on most of them so they're not so choked down nobody would mess with them.

Warning. Sarcasm in it's purest form to follow:

Stihl, the same company that has employees dedicated to harrass people trying to sell used Stihl parts on Ebay by claiming intellectual property rights.... NO. Couldn't be that Stihl.

Do they not realize that not everyone drinks their coolaide?

Naw. But they do realize that people that buy Stihl are predisposed to cult-like dedication to the company doctrine.

They could at least be upfront about it, instead of talking like we're ignorant fools.

I'd expect that from one of the worst enviromentally insensative equipment modifiers on the site......

[:dizzy::dizzy::dizzy:Sorry about the cheap shot man, but that was just too easy to pass up. :dizzy::dizzy::dizzy:]

If a modded saw is tuned correctly.....

If a muffler modded saw is tuned correctly, is there really any more unburnt fuel than the stock saw? Timberwolf has always put into perspective the combustion mixture ratio of fuel/oxygen etc. Modded saws are simply adding more of both fuel&air for a given displacement size, right? I thought the whole reason for limiter caps was to prevent the user from accidently adding too much fuel to the mixture because the ports & exhaust are fixed and can only draw so much air.

I would never modify my saw but why is it illegal to do so?

If you buy a ford or Chevy and modify it to make more power it is not illegal but why is a saw illegal to modify?
