The cutting condition is the key - there is a reason there are 3 options!

Grease or "filter oil" should not be needed.

The yellow mesh ones works perfectly here, and they are easy to keep clean, but I avoid using the black ones.....

I've noticed the same fine dust after the filter as well, hence my interest in the other filter - I jsut picked the felt style up at the dealer at lunch.

So what conditions would the felt one be used in , extremely dusty/ dirty? I wouldn't consider my conditions dusty/ dirty, yet I still have that gunk after the filter....?????

another 346 owner here with the yellow mesh filter and noticed the same thing - I will get the felt style ASAP!

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread - very useful!!!

Yep, my 346 came with the felt filter -and that's probably why I haven't had any issues. The fit inside the elbow and filter halves are very tight and grease wasn't needed.
The most recent saw I worked on that had the dust issue was a Solo 681, the filter fit poorly in the elbow and needed grease to fill the gap.:)

Is the saw a NE or old edition? because the old editon only had the twist on style filter if I remember right and some of them would pass dust, If this is the NE then just get the flocked filter, But I have to say the yellow 44micron like saw troll uses is all my saws have ever came with and I have never had any problems.

A air injected husky with a dirt getting past the filter? I call shenanigans.:D

:monkey:

nope - mine is filthy INSIDE the filter. If I can remember to get pics/ actually get a good one tonight I will.

The felt one I got won't fit dangit. My old filter has 2 nubbins on top that a metal clip (attached to the carb/ saw handle) snaps over and holds the filter down. This new felt filter doesn't have any "nubbins" and the molded "arms" that come off the circular part that attaches to the carb boot are different. Maybe the new filter I got was for the E-tech version - my 346 is a NE non-cat version - I'll head back to the dealer and let ya'll know what I find out.

my new 346 did the same thing, i was running it in cutting dead gum tree, hard as hell and is dusty at the best of times, i pulled the cover checked it out and seen the dust down the throat of the carb, straight to the shop, whats this in here, they gave me the flocked filter on the spot, told me to keep the mesh as a spare just in case but i just threw it away its useless.

the flocked filter should be WHITE bodied.

Sounds like you have the felt filter for the 372 low version and the 362 special.

Good luck in your quest, I'll be doing the same thing today.

Ok folks, I'm going to order some stuff from Bailey's. Probably time for a filter. My old 346 takes the twist lock type filter. Is it worth switching over to the NE type filter? Or just stick with old style original?

Thanks,

Your felt filter sound like it is the old version, that was twisted on. They will not fit on a newer saw.

Your dealer should have known that.......

The new filter won't fit on an older saw - unless you change more than just the filter.

Pics of the Yellow Mesh filter

Here's the pics of my filter. I had already cleaned it after cutting up a downed dead tree. The wood was more punk than good and the dust really coated the inside of the filter and carb. These pics are after about a half hour of cutting in a woodpile.

Dust & engines

Any dust in engines is bad. Ends up mixing with the oil/fuel mixture and makes a fine lapping (grinding) compound, not to mention all that coating I saw from another post looked like it was insulating the inside of the saw from any decent heat exchange. I'm wondering if I can mod the chainsaw to take a Amsoil high micron filter?
Oh well, in the meantime I'll order the felt filter and be grateful for all who posted with solutions.
Thanks!
Steve W.
