Fire wood cutting season is here and most are getting their saws ready. People are calling me everyday to see if I have bars, chains and air filters in stock. I ask them what saw do they have and 9 of out of 10 will say an MS290/029. At least 7 of those 9 will proceed to tell me what "A BAD MOTHER F@#&^#" Their saw is and how much wood it has cut. So from there I have concluded that the Stihl MS 290/029 is the Dodge Intrepid of chainsaws. Lets face it both were cheap and cheaply made. They both sold a million and neither are worth a damn!
Thank you for being my emotional tampon.

Come on the 029 is a decent saw. The home owners that don't know any better think the " FARM BOSS" is a bad MO FO!;)

so if the ms 290 is the intrepid then would that make a "wild thing" a pinto?

I don't care who ya are that was funny!!!

But I must say I was impressed with my buddy's 290 after I pretty well gutted the muffler and retuned the carb. That said, no I'm not buying one for myself anytime soon.

I think my wildthingy is a vega more than a pinto. But I dont brag to others that its the baddest saw in the woods either. One guy was braggin on his 290 and was showing me some pics of a tree he had bucked up. I was fairly impressed that his saw was able to cut such a large tree...Till i found out it took him three days to do so.

so it's what you call a "hybrid'?

even through i have a poulan 42cc with a 16" bar running stihl low pro
i love it for limbing

We have a bunch of idiots that cut wood off the beachs. it's a blast to watch them burn circles in wood, well the ones that will start, lots of swearing and carrying on with their kunststoff wichser wunders.

Asked the stihl dealer a few months ago how many saws he sold last year. The 290 outsold all other models combined and by more than double.

I know this may be hard to believe but only a fraction of a % of saw owners care about power to weight issues, the latest techno gadgets, cookie cutting, max power specs or even AS for that matter. Most just want a saw for when they need a saw.

Stihl understands this and the 290 fits the bill.

Do I want one? No. Will I put someone down for buying one? Never.

I don't own a Stihl but I did once own an Intrepid. That car had 203,000 miles on it and was still running good until I wrecked it. With that said I don't think I could ever buy another one.

i was thinking more along the lines of a chevette,or a comet:hmm3grin2orange:

Evidently you haven't ever seen a Comet with a 427 side oiler. ;)

The thing about Stihl is that they could paint turds Stihl colors and put their name on it and people would be swooning all over them. Very good marketing I must admit.

Hey man, quit dissin my 290!!!!:chainsaw: It's the baddest saw on my trailer cause it says farmboss.:hmm3grin2orange: Ok, I'll admit it I even use it every now & then just because it's there. With the muff mod & retune it's respectable for a homeowner saw, & the price was right. Oh yeah, & it's got those cool flippy caps too!

Emotional tampon. That's the funniest thing I've heard lately.:ices_rofl: A C

Ya'll need to let up on the MS290. They are what they are, and pretty good saws to boot. We don't have one but we had 3, 029 supers and I stihl have one and it goes we me all the time. 3 in the woods 029s, 038 mag, 044. If you can't do it with them you might as well go home.

The 290 was my first saw. Yes it may be a little heavy but all in all its a very dependable saw. I will admidt it doesnt have anything on my new saws (460 and 056) but i know i run that saw more than the other two. I have a 20" bar and do most of my cutting on hedge. Ive never had a problem with it being underpowerd. I wouldnt trade it for anything.
