Are you planning on being able to service and repair your new saw yourself, or do you need the fuzzy warm feeling of a warranty on a new saw?

If you're looking new, coming up with another 100 bucks will make your work much more enjoyable. 500 puts you at picking up a 'kita from Bailey's, as well as several other local options, I'm sure.

Otherwise, invest in a clean, used pro saw that will fit nicely into your current budget. 60cc saws make great all-around saws and work very well for firewood. Should you decide to pick up a Jonsered 2165 or a Makita 6401 I can assure you I'll be jealous. They're on my list. :D

Have fun and keep us updated.
ive been burned a lot of times buying stuff used online so you got to understand my concern when giving 4 to 5 hundred dollars of my hard earned money.i have a family to support.

The Echo CS600p off Ebay for $400 is the best buy out there for a good pro saw. Far as resale it will be a long time before the value goes down to $200. Walk out the door with a $650 Stihl and you lose $200. If you can find a Home Depot Kita is another good buy. Also if you can find a C62 Efco at John Deere for $400 or less. All good saws that won't lose much value. Steve

IF you insist on new and IF you've got a good Stihl dealer around...get you a MS290 with an 18, coupla extra chains, safety gear, etc. It'll get you through your first year just fine and then you can upgrade after you make some money. You can get most of your money back for it this time next year if you decide you dont like it

Sometimes Ebay has new Makita DCS 6401 saws from between $375.00 $475.00 new. There is a factory refurbished one on there now with a 1 year warranty.Baileys has parts for the Makitas too. They also sell them. They are a good saw.I like the Stihl MS361 also. You can find lightly used ones in your price range.Good luck..

After running one over with the skid loader I can tell you they have tough plastic. What model do you own? Steve

German Shorthairs.

I can pick up a 750evl for cheap, looks well built, heavy bugger.

edit> in case you did not get it, my comment comparing quality of plastics was just being absurd. I'm rooting for Echo.

I used to want a new saw, back when I was looking to replace my 038. Then I was able to find a nice used Makita 6401 at Home Depot. I felt like I got a good deal at $260 OTD with some extra stuff. Others have done much better on these saws at HD (<$200). It is becoming my go to saw, as my 038 is a little cantankerous in warm weather. Anyhoo... don't overlook some good used saws. THe 6401 is a good one.

The makita 6401's seem like a heckuva deal, don't bother with the big bore until you need to. I haven't run one, but I'm going to have to get one just so it can get it's due every time I speak up. Spend $500, oh wait..Chaps? Glasses? Files? Chain? Mix? are you budgeting for a saw or for cutting?

i already have most of the stuff i need as i had saws before and did a lot of cutting,i too burn my own wood, but would like to sell some to.ive got wedges files gas cans eye and ear protection the one thing i dont have is chaps.

well i finaly made up my mind and went with the two saw budget.first saw isnt much, its a 46 cc poulan pro with 18 inch bar .and the second saw is dolmar 510 with a 20 inch bar and 3/8 full chisel chain.havent picked up the dolmar yet but started cutting with the poulan and it did fairly well to be cutting red oak almost 30 inches in diameter,it was all it had,but with 3 year full replacment warranty ill just let her rip till she pops.thanks for all the advice from everyone.

dolmar ps 510 was the choice

well i have finaly got to get out and use the new saw, been raining a lot,but i will have to say the saw works great.Ihave been cutting 36 to 48 inch red oak, which i know is probaly a little much for this saw but its doin it very well. i have worked a couple of weekends with it and have about 4 or 5 tanks of gas though it and it seems to just get better. One thing i will say is that i dont know if i like the fact that theres no way to grease the bar so im asuming that its lubricated with the baroil.Must be something new every saw i ever had has grease ports so you can give it a pump or two of good quality grease.

That 510 is a great saw. It should hold up well for awhile with what you are using it for. My only question is, did the dealer de-EPA the saw and tune it right for you? That is something you want to keep an eye on, the newer stuff has to be set up right to run right. Good luck with your new business and saws. Go Dolmar:chainsawguy:.

Cutting stuff that big, I would save up for a good 70-80cc saw. I'm as broke as anyuone so I know moneys tight, but just put a little back here and there and watch the classified for a used one.

A one saw plan doesn't cut it (pun intended) for having access to 100 acres of woods and thinking about starting a firewood business.

The first time you get pinched really hard you'll wished you would have bought at least one more saw to cut yourself loose.

Same deal if you hit a piece of wire or a rock, or just dirty wood. You can grab another saw and keep cutting, or waste valuable time trying to get the saw back in service again with a sharp chain on it.

I very seldom buy new saws, the used market it excellent, if you know what to look for.

I'd grab up a Husqvarna 55, preferably an "Air Injection" model with the compression release. Most, if not all of those have the closed port P/C.

I'd grab up an Echo CS-370 or CS-400 for limbing. With some patience you can have both and still stay within the $400 budget. Good used 55's are around $200-250, and the little Echo's are under $200 NIB. These two saws teamed up together would be a good start. I'd add a 60-70cc saw to the line-up at some point as well, for 20" and larger stuff.......Cliff
