I sometimes see little piles of wood by the side of the road (apparently free for the hauling), and if it's good stuff I'll stop and pick it up. I usually first knock on a door if there's one nearby.

Once I started picking up a pile left by the city's utility workers when the homeowner came out, saying that she wanted some of it herself. I felt bad for not asking that time, but she was a friend anyway, and I helped her carry what she wanted over to her pile.

I found another utility pile right across the street from my shop this week. It's been there for several days, and I'm not sure whether I should grab it or not. What do you guys think????

Looks like really dirty cedar. Might not be a good idea to take that stuff.
I have been picking up the trimmings from the county guys. It lays there and nobody takes it, so I take it.
No sense letting it rot. I got two heaped truckloads of oak, maple, cherry and aspen this weekend.
My wife was kind enough to help me.

Looks like a definite trap to me, is your account in good standing?

Good manners to ask IF there is someone around. BUTT: it's a public way, take what you can.
It's called scrounging and is legal.
Now all the amateur attorneys may speak........................................:msp_scared:

They leave those all over by me - usually they hold them up with wires but if you cut down 3 or 4 in a row you can get them to fall pretty well. Burns real hot.

On a more serious note a right-of-way is not the same as ownership. The property lines around me do not have gaps for the roads - I or my neighbors pay taxes on the land where the road is. The public has rights to use the land for certain purposes, but that does not imply that anything found within those rights-of-way are fair game. You can't park there or place signs there, etc., any more than you could in my yard. In other areas this may be set up differently

This question is a lot like asking can I get the old RR ties left when RR crews replace with new ones. I found out you do and possibly face arrest. That is RR property. I would think those poles are cities property unless you have approval to take um. But if you want to burn a pole you are really hurting for wood. But the way, the old RR ties around her are $25 for one. The poles a lot more. :msp_wink:

I find the best time to collect that type of wood is early morning, about 2:00 AM (the bars close at 2:00 'round here), 'cause most any city employee on duty is busy with traffic stops at that time. The second best time is Sunday morning, between 7:00 and 11:00 AM, 'cause most urban dwellers are doin' something called church at that time. The third option is any weekday, between 4:30 and 5:30 PM (shift change and quitin' time), just be sure to wear an orange vest and hardhat so ya' look like you're supposed to be there if'n a neighbor looks out the window.

I will suggest however, that when you do collect it, you should get it under-cover and out'a sight ASAP... I've found that minimizes the possibilities of any later issues.

Oh, and one more thing... Try and get two or three friends to put on orange vests and hard hats also, they need to be standing around or leaning on shovels and rakes while you work. That makes it look more authentic if'n someone drives by.

If you don't have permission to take it, leave it there. It belongs to somebody.

We caught a guy last year cutting firewood rounds off of logs that we'd dropped but not skidded to the landing yet. His excuse was "well, nobody was doing anything with it".

Those look like new poles to me, awaiting install. You certainly can grab them if you choose to, just be willing to pay the consequences :msp_wink:

No, those are clearly deadfall - likely a victim of the PPPB (Purple Power Pole Borer). Remember that the greenies and the EPA are colluding to keep you from your god-given right to burn stuff, so if anyone approaches you while you're bucking that stuff up just open up on 'em with major firepower - they're just the EPA police.

(that oughta do it........:poke: )

Now you're talking. From Penn no less. I didn't think you were as crazy as us up there.

It is amazing how much you can do with just an orange vest.
Nobody wants to talk to you or even look at you.:msp_rolleyes:

You folks seem to be just a bit crazy to me....:D
Of course I make my living as an engineer for a city owned Electric Power Company.

This is why they are talking about banning OWB in PA. Too many people are burning rr ties, utility poles, and garbage.
