I'm looking for a good saw to use everyday, I don't really need a large saw, but I need something to handle a 20 inch bar, I want to be able to do a few mods such as muffler porting and throwing out that pesky head gasket. I have been reading on here as well online n. I have been thinking about these models 029 039 n, s260 ms290 310 or 390 any body recommend any of these saw if so which would you suggest be the best option for me or maybe any other saws to help me narrow it down, thanks.

why not a dolmar 5105 a 346 xp both handle the 20 " they can also run a 3/8 chain instead of just .325 dolmar is closer in value to the 290 but its a pro style saw got a dealer in the area . everyday use would lead me to go to pro series and 50 cc runs a 20" bar at max.

"Our number one selling chain saw: enough said. Designed for rugged homeowner or landscape and farm use, the legendary STIHL FARM BOSS® is a true work saw. With plenty of power to spare, you can let the MS 290 do the cutting for you — from limbing to felling and bucking larger trees into firewood"

Get the MS290 and don't look back. Unless of course you want to throw a extra $200 more and get a 261.

If the MS260 is an option (hopefully used), I think they are a fine saw. MS261's are great saws too, tons of power for a 50cc saw and fuel efficient as well.
A friend of mine has a 290, not necessarily my pick of saws- BUT they are a well built saw, and a good bang for the buck. They have kept quite a few people warm for sure.

Out of your list I would take the 260 first, 390 second. Nice part about taking the 260 now, you can get a 460 in the (hopefully near) future and you will have a nice 50/70 combo.

On a serious note we can go on all day about what our favorite saws are but unless you do all your own work on them(like myself and many others here),You need to go to all the dealers in your area and find the most helpful one and buy the size saw you want in the brand he sells. Also Dolmar is a very good brand
