Everybody cries about new technology! If you dont like it there are many saws out there that dont have the new technology. Old school saws still exist up to non stratified saws.

New technology is often fine, new gadgets usually not - and Stihl surely is the "master" of gadgets, but not technology...:msp_sad:

The EPA, et. al. waste time on this stuff because it plays well in SoHo (not Peoria). They can't (ever) control the 3 biggest worldwide polluters. 1. Off-shore industry. 2. Forest fires. 3. Volcanos.

I demonstrate absurdity by lusting for 797s while posting this from a droid x2...

And I love new technology if it makes sense and reduces cost to me (it’s cheaper to run my microwave for 80 seconds than preheat and use the oven). All I’m sayin’ is not all new technology can be classified as an “advance”.

So if all this new chainsaw technology is an actual advance… answer me these questions…
Why is it that the Stihl “MS” series of saws are heavier, bulkier, and require larger displacement engines to deliver the same rated power (on average) as the previous “0xx” series saws?
And how can you call that an “advancement”?


Developing new techonology is not cheap, manufacturers need to recoup their R&D costs somehow

I’m LMAO right now. I went back and read the posts from WoodHeatWarrior again and now I think I understand what he’s sayin’ about the IntelliCarb… and I sort’a feel like a fool. If I’ve got this correct, Stihl has routed the needle diaphragm vent away from open atmosphere and placed somewhere internal and downstream from the air filter (like the bowl vent on a Tecumseh) and gave it the buzz word “IntelliCarb”.

Is that what you’ve been tryin’ to tell me WoodHeatWarrior? Too damn funny!
Well, if’n I have that correct I can live with the IntelliCarb as long as it has both low and high adjustable metering screws… But I remain unconvinced about the M-Tronic.
Yup, that's all it is, the whole thing! I gotta give their marketing folks credit for spinning what I regard as fixing a mistake into a feature! And like I said, the old Mac PM605/610/650 put the whole carb in a box under the air filter, so the diaphragm vent is in there too. Accomplishes the same thing.
 
Take into consideration the standard to measure MPG's has change quite a bit over the years. I know my L6 74 Buick never got over 17 MPG.:msp_razz:

Mike, are you really trying to argue that the average efficiency of vehicles is no better than it was in 1970? I think the examples you gave were likely exceptions rather than the norm.



I'm not trying to argue anything at all!
I simply stated a fact.
The little (for the time) Henry J and the Ramblers with the sixes in them would regularly get 30+or- mpg in the 50's.
The Volkswagen Rabbit and Audi diesels were getting 50+ mpg in 1979.
THAT should be the benchmark!
Don't bring anything to market that isn't at least that good.
ANYTHING less is a step in the wrong direction.....PERIOD!!!
Your computer controlled bullcrap gadgetry is worthless unless it can meet those efficiency standards and be as reliable and easy to maintain as the previous model.
Don't try to pawn gagetry off on me and tell me that I "only loose 10 MPG" I'm not impressed with high tech dog poo!
I talked to a friend recently who spent 1/2 an hour looking for the dipstick in his car. Finally got the manual out and found that it doesn't have one. The computer checks the oil level and lets you know when it is low. NO THANKS!

It burns my FTL's that all of the politicians and corporate executives lip synch that old "We want to reduce our dependence on foreign oil" line but practically no one sells a diesel automobile here anymore.

Ya'sir, I've owned a couple IntelliCarbs myself... LOL...
I once had an el-cheap-o little Poulan top-handle I bought at a hardware store for like $79.oo in the early 80's, it had the carb sitting in a box under a foam air filter... so yup, the vent was inside the air filter.
Way, way, way too funny... an early 80's, hardware store, el-cheap-o Poulan was using the "IntelliCarb" decades before Stihl thought of it... LMAO!!!
 
Ignorance almost always = fear. You learned about what you once feared, therefor you're more accepting of it. Now lets work on the M tronic bit...

The IntelliCarb vent is one thing, but...
Talking me into accepting a chainsaw (or any small two-cycle engine) where adjustable metering screws have been replaced with electronics, solenoids, diaphragms and whatnot is gonna' be a lot tougher... I just ain't that trusting.
 
Stihl's marketing dept. must have some brainboxes in it. Seems they're able to make a small improvement and sell it as a new feature. Thats probably one of the things that has given them an edge over the companies that made these changes years ago.

i am in my 20;s and hope all the techno crap dies out before real men do and maybe society will have a chance; with people of actual know how still roaming about. if not we are screwed.
 
Ah, the battle between old and new...

How about this. An automatic Honda Civic or CRX... 35-40 mpg, easy. Nowadays, the new Fiestas and what have yous are getting the same. Not much more hp out of them either.

Like the other guy said, old VW diesels getting over 50 mpg. My mom's uncle had several Rabbit diesels over his years, and all of them easily passed 500,000 miles and still put out 50+ mpg. He said the damn salt did more damage than anything else.

How about the trucks? You got the older diesels that get about 22 mpg, on a full size crew cab long box. Hasn't changed hardly at all with the new diesels except maybe throttle response on the new Fords with the inverted intake/exhaust set up.

rms61moparman is right... it's all a lie/scam to get you to think your old car is worthless. You cannot change mpg standards because there still is 5280 feet in a mile. It doesn't matter what they claim you can't throw other bs numbers in there and claim there is a difference. Ever notice that the weight of cars in general are approaching what they were in the 70's? The new Taurus is nearly a whopping 2 tons! I wonder why... oh, it's all of that unnecessary crap that no one needs...

Are you people really this blind? It's them trying to get you to buy stuff that 1. you probably can't afford, 2. will probably get into/further into debt with, 3. it really isn't much better than what has already been manufactured many years ago.

There's only one thing they're trying to do... get you to buy something you 'need' but don't want, and probably can't afford.

Take, for example, the idea of E15 gas. No vehicle older than 2007 can run that stuff properly. It'll cause major corrosion of fuel system parts, and possibly engine parts. If that #### gets out, be very careful about where you get gas from. I can see the sales of 150+ gallon fuel storage tanks skyrocketing so that folks can have them filled with ethanol free gas to escape this bs.

Even after buying a fuel storage tank and keeping it filled, it'd still be cheaper than ruining a perfectly good vehicle/lawn equipment/etc. and ending up having to buy some new (IMO) POS with all kinds of crap you really don't need. (onstar, in dash navigation, etc.)

Don't forget KISS, the less there is to go wrong, the better. The simpler it is to repair on your own, the better. The easier it is to adapt a part or repair something with a part you fabbed yourself, the better. The easier it is for you to learn how to fix it yourself, the better. Trust me, you won't have a hell of a clue what to do to fix your new car with 100 computers on board. And you won't have the tools to properly repair it, like a code scanner, service info, etc.

Yes, older stuff tends to need a little more tlc and regular maintenance, but that is often preferable to dealing with some major problem with no way to fix it. People are just getting too damn lazy.


I'm outta here. I'm still amazed that there are quite a few clueless assclowns out there regarding lots of stuff.

At least not everyone is so clueless as to what the hell is going on. BTW, stock market investing is a bad idea... find better stuff to invest in, like stuff you can actually have in your hands. The stock market has been and will be manipulated...

In that case shouldn't you have painted this post on the wall of a cave? And it takes 'actual know-how' to use technology as well, perhaps you meant practical hands-on skills?
 
Buy yourself an 011 and you'll be set. 90% of the people speaking have way more saws than they need to cut their 5 cords of wood per year. I'm more of a realist than an enthusiast...i've had over 100 stihl saws at one time before reality struck and i got back to reality.

Easy hills stopping and accelerating aka the real world. Think of it this way, at one point manufactures could claim any number they wanted to, same with the joke gross HP. The old 454's wouldn't make 150 SEA HP today. Standards aka laws didn't exist at the time, I'm glad they do now!!!!!!!!!

“Technology” is nothing more than an excuse; anything man-made is “technology”… a carpenter’s hammer and metal nail are “technology”. There was a time when new “technology” brought us things that were smaller, lighter, delivering more power and at lower cost than the previous. That all began to change during the 70’s when government started forcing manufacturers to develop new “technology” that would protect us from ourselves. Does anybody remember the sluggish performance and 435 miles of vacuum hoses on late 70’s cars to control emissions? That was new “technology”, but a damn poor new “technology” that cost all of us untold dollars. Just because the “technology” is new doesn’t automatically make it a good idea.

Next came gadgetry during the late 80’s. Since then people have somehow become convinced they can’t survive without gadgets, especially electronic gadgets… and it HAS to be the latest-and-greatest also. My first pocket-sized cell phone (a good idea) rang when someone called, and when I dialed someone answered… I charged the battery once a week and carried it for 6 years. Now my plain-Jane cell has so much unused and worthless crap running on it I have to charge it every day and I can’t get one to last more than 16-18 months (if that)… and my daughter’s “smart” phone needs charging twice a day sometimes.

Of course I have electricity and a microwave… I ain’t stuck in the “Stone Age”. But I don’t buy things with no practical value… like some silly Easy2Start, IntelliCarb or M-Tronic control on a simple power tool. I’d rather have to pull the rope and adjust my carb on occasion than have to put up with all that unnecessary weight, bulk and complication that eventually means unreliability. I can remember when advancements in chain saw “technology” meant simpler, smaller, lighter, more powerful saws at lower cost… now-a-days advancements in chain saw “technology” mean complicated, bulkier, heavier, less powerful saws at higher cost. You can go ahead and call that “advancement” if’n ya’ want… I call it idiocy.

And I sure the hell ain’t gonna’ pay for it.

When I was in tech school the first loader the instructor put me on was a 950 cat. After the first couple days off having to rev the engine for 5 minutes every time you hit the breaks so the air pressure would build and release the brakes again I was lucky enough to get put in the cab of a IT18F. A great improvement. I realy could see how technology is realy good. Not so fast while in that same tech program I also saw a Select-O-Speed that defyed any attempt to trouble shoot. A newer model JD that the reverser went out and had to be split to fix/replace it and so on. I came to the conclusion that not only does technology make our lives much easier. It also contributes to the thick wallets of those getting paid high hourly rates to fiqure out why the machine won't move foward and/or that the little red light with the chinese letters on it is actauly the parking brake.
