good evening fellas,i have a question concerning several trees that or on my place.after katrina i had several fairly large,24" and over, oaks blown down and partially down, just being held by the root ball.i ahve already cut up the ones that were all the way down but don't quit know how to tackle the ones that are at a 45 degree angle to the ground.i started to just cut at the base but was uncertain as to what would happen when it did fall.so i just wanted to ask you pros out there.
thanks for the help,

As a general rule I prefer cutting smaller pieces. Less surprises that way. Keep in mind that when the tree separates from the stump, the root ball will likely fall back in the hole. Don't be under it.

skwerl i too wuld rather cut smaller pieces but the smaller pieces are about 30-40 feet in the air.so i need to know how to safely get the tree to the ground.
thanks,

wradman, currently do not have a digital camera but picture a tree half way blown down being held in place by half of the trees roots then you will have it.
thanks for the quik responses,

tree

the tree will be under an enormous amount of pressure i wouldn't recommend trying it unless you are experienced at it the tree is going to almost surely barberchair which is dangerous for u

wradman,no there isn't any thing valuable under the tree i just wanted to cut it up for firewood.whats barberchair mean?

barberchair

hard to explain i'm going to look and see if i have some picctures for u if you have lots of room to work i could help explain to you how to take the pressure off the tree, i sent you an email'

barberchairing is basically the tree splitting vertically up the tree when you saw about 1/2 way through. The cut part violently springs skyward sending the top crashing to the ground. It generally happens VERY fast and if any part of you is over this peice, you could be a dead man.

I may get objections to this, but you could try to cut a small wedge out of the underside as though you were cutting it down to start with. Im not sure though as I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE with trees in this condition.

It may be wise to simply hire a professional to get them on the ground for you instead of doing it yourself.

tree

i have alot of experience with blowdown, but alot of what you want to accomplish depends on your ability ,the surroundings around the tree, the size of the saw and the lengh of your bar(will it reach all the way through the tree) could you tell me what is the angle of the tree 90 is straight up and down 45 is 1/2 way down etc

the tree is more like 25 degrees,it is where i can touch part of the top with my saw but not all of it.

I'd rent a tow behind snorkel lift for a day. Clean your gutters out while you're at it.

barber chair potential

I would definitely skip the climber on these. Unless you stood to inherit from them.

The Barber Chair thing and its solutions are somewhat complex. You really should hire a bonded local pro for the falling. You can do the limbing/bucking and save some money there if you have a decent background.

The 45 degree lean you're talking about is very serious. Also, loggers have died when those root balls crushed them. That can occur hours or days after the tree has been severed. Those attractive nuisances could also kill children.

Get a buddy, or perhaps that nerd kid nearby, and get us some photos.

Just a quick thought here; seems to me that if you have the room, tie a good sturdy rope or cable to it and winch it the rest of the way over (or use a truck/tractor w.h.y.), could even try pulling it a bit to the side (swing it if need be), safe and cheap. Nobody in their right mind would be climbing that.
:chainsaw: (love this smiley, just had ta use it) :D

leaner

The safest way is a little tricky if it's almost on the ground and sprung, first you must determin that there is no presure side ways where the tree could swing towards you , then you must check the ground that there are no imature trees already lieing down that may stand up when the root wad falls back into place, the next step is you need a good running sharp saw with a good escape route behind you start your cut about 4 ft away from the rootwad straight down everytime the tree starts to crack and pop pull your saw out of the cut and start a new one about 3 inches closer to the root repeat this until the presure on the tree is released and the tree is on the ground,be sure your body is on the rootwad side of the cut the root will not kick sideways but the tree can. you will need good eye protection it will make a real mess of the bottom 6 ft of the tree but it is probably one of the more safe and inexpensive ways to do it. Do not keep the saw in one cut to long or you will get pinched it should take about 8 cuts straight down , when you get to the point of about 15% of the tree holding on , the presure is off and the tree is lying on the ground you can then move about 10 feet up the trunk cut it right off there before cutting the last little bet off the root to keep from getting pinched. good luck let me know how you make out be safe wear the proper gear and have a second saw handy and a buddy.
