How much does your dealer charge to repair a chain?

If you go into a shop with a chain with several boogered up drive links, and they don't charge you a price approaching a new chain, then you need too stick with them up until the going out of business auction.

Back to the comment about everyone needing to make money. In that case if a shop would rather sip coffee while selling a new chain instead of preforming physical labor then I do not want to deal with them.
 
Very true. Lots of things you would do yourself do not make economic sense in a shop. Just the way it is.

Well if you treat the customer right when you are sitting on your duff doing nothing then he she might just come back again and spend some real money with you. It is called repeat business. That concept has been working since the beginning of time. KARMA
 
Chris, be thankful you don't live in Oz. My Stihl dealer has a sign by the counter to loosen your pants while you wait in line. Saves him time.....

I cant believe what Im missing out on ! We repair any chain for our customers for free. Maybe we should start charging a little , sound like most dealers do.

Time is money, sir. I can agree you would do that for a very good customer occasionally, but if you make it look like your service is for free, you won't stay in business long, especially if you work with staff you have to pay. As a shopkeeper I would not spent my time repairing a 30$ chain especially if it has been ground twice already....
 
I know what you're saying Will, and you're right, I spend no money at this place at all. But I certainly would if they weren't retarded.

I know what you're saying too Chris, there is one shop like this here, complete fools. I will not go there. We've been without a good saw shop for years, finally the walkers opened a shop in town, and I'm one happy guy now. Can't wait to hear about the makita!!

Yes time is money so they should spend their time making money. A shop that charges outrageous prices and provides terrible customer support is not spending their time wisely. They are standing around with their thumbs in their asssses and a coffee in their hand waiting on the big score. The folks that treat people right and do things occasionally for free are busting their butts and making money
 
I had one fixed and wasn't charged. I guess that is why I go there.:laugh:
 
Just what level of a repair of a chain are you talking about? Repairing a chain with a few drive links destroyed is plain nuts, especially for free.

If they were all in succession, you would still need a length of matching donor chain, and 2 sets of tie straps at a bare minimum, and contrary
to some of you guys, that things cost money, dealer cost is @ $1 a set, for Oregon.

If the damaged drive lengths were not in succession, it would be two tie straps each, plus a new drive link, and you would be taking out a cutter as well. Do these miracle free shop replace these new as well? I really doubt it.

Likely they hammer the damn thing as flat as possible, cram the thing into the poor bar groove, and hope the poor clutch on the saw can
turn it, run the bustard untill the bar groove is wallowed out, and hand it back to you. If that don't do it, then "Dang, You need a new chain......"

The question with how far you go to repair a chain is a separate issue. I get satisfaction out of 'saving' chains, but I do that on my own time - could not make much money at it, except for the value of the chains.

w8ye . . . . I spotted the preset to be 3/8 LP on a .325 chain. Then I saw all the DL's were dinged when the chain would not fit in the bar. Took me 2 hrs filing with a raker file to smooth out the DL's so the chain would fit in the bar . . .

I've gotten used chains where the 'repair' tie straps were mashed with a hammer, or put on backwards/upsidedown/inside-out (some of the newer tie straps are directional) or where the cutters were mixed from different types of chains. One was a 'semi-safety chain' that I did not realize until someone else pointed it out! Sometimes those are best kept as 'donors' to repair other chains.

I find it much faster to polish off dings on drive links with a ScotchBrite wheel in a bench grinder, or a medium grinding wheel if that is what you have. Hold the chain 'inside-out' so that the DLs are presented to the grinding wheel and work around the loop taking off the burrs. Turn it over and do the other side. Takes 5-10 minutes per chain, depending how badly they are burred and how many DLs are damaged.

I mean, if I sold a spark plug for $1.99, and my cost was $1.39. Half of these jokers would call me a stealer!!!!!!!!!!!

We just need to clarify things, so the guys don't go into a good dealer expecting something silly. Then go around calling him a stealer....

If someone brings in a boogered up chain, and if repairing it would involve more than a quick deburring, or replacing one bent tie strap,
I would recommend a new chain. If it was one of my customers, I may do it for free. But if someone brings in a butchered up chain with several boogered up drive links, he needs a new chain, any further discussion is silly!!!!!
 
Well we all could brag about bringing a basket case chainsaw/chain out of the pits of hell for not much , but a bit of time.... Hell I am the
master of that.

But Macgiver had corporate sponsers, other mower/chainsaw shops have electric bills, mortgages, phone bills....

I am not in the business Fish. I do it for myself, friends, and my disaster/storm clean-up volunteer buddies (but, for them it is free!).

Hence the comment ". . .could not make much money at it . . .". But if I save or extend the life of a chain, it saves me or them the cost of buying a new one.

Naw, I am just trying to convince these guys that anyone that works on saws for a living is not a crook......

They always throw up some guy fixed this or that for free, but really!!! Do you expect a real saw shop to waste 1/2 hour on a chain. and
$5 worth of parts for free, and stay in business.

I dealt with logger aholes for years, wanting to get me to sell them Stihl chain for our dealer cost, they claimed they could get that price in the next county... I told them to go there.....
 
I've never asked that dealer that does that for me to work on a thrown or even used chain. I took some new ones that were sent to me from the west coast and the wrong drive link for the bar that was bought with it. I think he even give me some presets another time I was in there buying parts so I guess he figures he would help me out for buying a few $$$ in parts and bars there.
