come on out and give it a shot and then make your comical statment.
how many trees this size are cut these days? just curious

RWoods I was looking at your pictures before I looked at you were from and thought to myself that land looks like my father in laws beautiful area in east Tennessee. As it turns out you are from Tennessee where?

there are still many tree's this size in the PNW but they are definitely more rare then years ago. 50cc saws do not rule the roost here. 390 or 660 with a 36" bar is minimum or you ain't work'n. some guys use 372's or 460's but unless modded they just aren't enough. the company will have a couple 3120's or 880's with a 60-72" bar for tree's that are that big. around here 36" is whats fitted to your saw. if you come across a tree thats smaller you use it no matter what. can't justify carrying a saw with anything smaller because most of the tree's won't come down in a justifiable time with a small bar. with todays heli logging the only tree's that come down are the bigger ones. around here anyways. clearcutting is done with mechanical cutters now but they just take down pecker poles. i know what yer saying guy. it may look like they are carrying around way to big of bar sometimes when they are taking down a smaller tree but they need the bar when they come across the average sized tree which is what they take down the most. they are not stupid. they would never carry around more bar if they didn't have to. they are logging nanoose bay right now. they may have even finished by now. all old growth douglas fir. 42" was their minimum bar length.

Well I can always move down to a short bar on a big saw.
It dont work real good going the other direction.
But what do I know, a short bar for me is 28" on a 440 and a 33" on a 660.

Why make two cuts when you can make one? Most of the logs i cut are under 30" in the woods most mills wont take much bigger. But when doing residental the big saws are needed for the big maples pines willows and cottonwoods. Its hard to cut a 5' tree with a 25" bar thats simple math.

I use a 245cc Disston KB7-AY to cut any limb from 2" to 36"
It is a shame my saw only came with a 36" bar. That 11hp Kiekhaefer Mercury engine can run 84" of bar and chain without breaking a sweat!

With the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, my Mercury Disston had a pretty good workout!
I cannot count how many trees I cut down to size with that thing!

Redwoods...or cedar?

nope they are big old dirty red woods. nanoose bay has been protected for years just like cathedral grove. the first nations pushed to log nanoose bay for so long and they were finally able to do so. there were alot of hippies climbing tree's i remember trying to save them but it didn't happen. it was all over the news out here. if you guys didn't know there were just as many redwoods in B.C as california. the same size i don't know but there were just as many. B.C is the pacific northwest too. some even argue the pacific northwest stretches as far as alaska but there are no real borders to say that. these were red woods and there was on hell of alot of contraversy over logging nanoose bay. i think they will push to log cathedral grove next but i would say it will be next to impossible for them unless they aquire the land. right now it is a protected area of crown land. everytime i drive through cathedral i think damn thats alot of houses :)

It would have to be cedar, as far as i know, redwood isnt natural his far north. I think the main old growth logging is cedar and douglas fir in this area.

oh well call me stupid. hahahahah i always thought douglis fir were red woods. i gotta get my sh#$ together. sorry about that. they were massive douglas fir. there was alot of contraversy over logging the area though. so is red wood the actual name of the tree. stupid me :bang:. i've never actually seen a redwood other then on video then.. learn something new everyday. now i know. there are some massive cedars out here too. i would like to know the actual name of a redwood tree. like you call a cedar a cedar tree would you call redwood a redwood tree

I stand corrected. I have lived my whole life on the island, and never once seen a redwood in a natural forest. The things I learn here. I have been to cathedral many times, it is staggering how big some of those douglas firs are. I bet that with how big a tourist attraction it is, it will never get logged. Hell, you could fill a couple logging trucks with some individual trees there.

Edit: I guess i was right. It is nice to see someone able to admit a mistake, that isnt very common. I thought it was strange I have lived here all my life, and never seen a redwood. No worries man, i get trees mixed up all the time.

What do you do? And why avoid directly answering questions. No pics either.

We know what we are. Do you have any pictures of you and your crews?
not avoidng anything/anyone here, as i have zero to prove to anyone here. we raise and wholesale trees here on a modest piece of property. and also have 2 crews that maintain fire trails and right of way for dome pipeline, trans-canada and a few others as well.what else would you 2 like to know. i asked a few questions about logging out west, and the california girls get there panties in a twist. what pics would you like to see? i have some pics, would it satisfy you, or would you just say "how can we be sure that is you"? what do any pics really prove anyway? brad snelling puts every life event on the net, and we all know what kind of creditbility/following he has here, big deal. if you are real super loggers than good for you. i have never been to west coast, nor have any desire to. the state of california provides little to no value to this country in my eyes. as i stated, i have absolutely ZERO TO PROVE to anyone here, nor they to me. if you cannot answer a few questions, or take a harmless jab once in a while, then i feel sorry for you. i refuse to argue over nothing, in an online forum no less.

Chainsaw milling is another thing I have am interested in. However, with family connections in woodmizer, i could get such a good deal on a bandmill, it just isnt worth it to do chainsaw milling. I think I will keep my eye out for a big saw, I am quite liking both the 2100cd, and 066. If i find a good runner in the $300 range, i might go for it. It feels weird to be wanting a husky, with my love of stihl.

2100 is a great saw to mill with but at least local for me a horrible saw to get parts for. Parts can be had but they typically expensive and take a while to find.

066-660 are not as fun to mill with but are fairly common and easy to get parts for new and used. I can usually get a running ready to use 660 for the same money as a beater 2100 that will undoubtly need some attention and more money before getting mounted to a mill.

Closest thing to a 2100 on a mill that is fairly common and still availible new is the 395, not as fun as the 2100 but better than the 660.

Get one of each and then decide.

As the bagel said to the toaster, "In before Lox".

See what I did there?

California has little to know value in your opinion? Really? Please feel free to continue dwelling in your myopic existence.

Hmm around here you see 4 2100s for every one 066/660. The 066 normally go for $500-700, and the 2100 normally go for $350-$500. I dont really have the money for an 066 right now, so I think I will start with a 2100. What parts have you had a hard time finding? As far as i can tell, you can still get jug, piston, seals, gaskets ect. Ignition I havnt seen, along with the plastic covers.
