Figured it would be good to have a thread to link to when people are thinking about buying a boat anchor.

So why would you NOT buy a Stihl 290?

Wonder how one would compare to the new Husqvarna 455 Auto tune. Actually like the changes, from the new top cover design to the Auto tune concept....it's a home owner grade $400 dollar saw.

What about turning this thread positive and have folks rate the best 400 dollar options? To me it depends on the intended use for a saw. Small wood? Maybe a sub $400 dollar Husqvarna 450 makes the best option? Nice saws and the current evolution of the 350 series? For an all around home owner saw they are pretty good options. I already mentioned the 455 Autotunes. They have to be considered as an alternative.

For me, building a 268/272 for under $400 with an OEM top end is an excellent pro level saw concept. Even a used 365/372 is an excellent option for that price range.

I would bet a built 268 with fresh piston & ring, oil pump & seals, carb kit, fuel line, spark plug etc. would be tough to beat for a all around $400 dollar option. Just an opinion. :) Ok that 365 with a fresh ring & carb kit....maybe.

A LOT of MS290's are sold. Any one ever do a comparison side by side with other $400 options? The Stihl ratings for their HP are better than competitive products in the similar price points, I.e. 291 has a better rated HP than Husqvarna 455. I feel a video concept beginning to happen...

Start a thread about the top reasons to buy one then. To me spending $400+ on a farmboss doesn't make much cents with all the other choices out there.

He spelled "sense" for you and you still blew it.

The weight, other than that I think it's a great saw, after the muffler mod of course!

I am constantly advising newbie firewood types to buy a 290/455 as they are well built, work well, and will last forever for light duty with good gas. I am then drowned out by the "only a ported pro saw will do" guys. Of course, I am a week away from owning 2 ported pro saws, but that's different:D

Not that I would ever spend the money for one, but just out of curiosity what is the difference between the 290 and 291? Is the 291 strato? M-tronic?

Not everyone cuts all day everyday so the 290 works great for many people. Not everyone has a Husky dealer close by either.

Realistically people on this site are minorities. The average joe in the consumer market goes out and buys one off the shelf, they don't research power to weight ratio online, warranties, etc.

I bought into farm boss hype years ago and ran a o29 super thinking it was a great saw. I was the 'typical' farmboss owner cutting a few cords of firewood a year and never had any trouble with the saw.

I wish someone had set me straight sooner. The few extra $$'s for a 026 would have been well worth it over the years.

Maybe it is your avatar, dudnt make u look too smart ...( look at mine,..)
Guess if you have to explain it's not funny.
<---- that was 'my' fat period.

Anything wrong with that picture? See a thumb on the scale? For one little example, they rate a 250 at 3 hp, RedMax rates a GZ4000 at 2.2 hp. The RedMax will embarrass the Stihl, in many ways.

More importantly Stihl treats customers high-handedly.

Man O man,

there was a time when I thought the 290 would be the catz arse!

Stihl just made a saw akin to the old 10-10s and the wonderful old Homies.

How many million,,,,,,,no billion cords of wood have been cut with the mid 50cc saws?

Not the best, but far from the worst fo' sure.
