Maybe I'm missing the obvious but do roller catchers on the felling spikes really need to roll?

I have two saws I would like to make a couple of these for. I have some rectangular stock that has a stud in one end. I would just need to turn down the other side to go into the inner spike.

Am I way out in left field here for thinking they really don't need to roll?

They do not need to roll but they should be made of a soft metal like aluminum or hard plastic to prevent chain damage if the chain derails. The ceramic roller style is quite hard on chains but nowhere as bad as steel would be. I make aluminum ones for my saws.

Hard plastic is not a metal. :p

I have some aluminum stock also. Just will take a tad bit more work.

Care to share a picture?

Not much to it really, just a section of 5/8" round stock aluminum with a 3/16" hole drilled through it so it slips on over the original stud that the ceramic roller once set on. I do care if a chain did happen to come off and hit the catcher, far less damage done to the chain on softer aluminum. The hard plastic also works well for stopping a derailed chain. On long bars the chain will derail more often than on bars under 24" so preventing damage to the cutters and drive/ guide links is important to some of us.

^ This.

I keep my chain tension tight up to the bar (no, not too tight) and still throw chains here and there; usually while brushing out around trees or some such. Often times I can pop the undamaged chain right back on and keep going.

I was at tsc today looking for studs to make these. Btw they have gallons of bar oil on sale for 7 bucs.

I should just buy the catchers from baileys but its more entertaining for me to just make what I need.

Woo hoo again!?

If you go back to some of the older pro saws without roller catchers (and I'm talking saws with asome grunt) and see what happens when you throw a chain you'll see why roller catchers are so good. Hooking a thrown chain on a solid, non moving catcher not only potentially ruins your chain but ruins the catcher too and quite often breaks it. You throw 3 chains at full throttle and you've got a busted catcher. That doesn't happen with roller catchers.
People that never throw chains are either BS'ing, don't do much cutting, or only cut grounded logs. Once you get twigs and brush in the way throwing a chain is nearly unavoidable.

Matt, I know this is a little off topic but I DO value your opinion highly. I need a Breaker/Spinner what should I get? I like quality and understand its good to get a few spare punches and anvils. Do I need to purchase offshore to get a decent price/product? I'm pretty close to ya mate 'Stihlman'. I just plain refuse to go into Stihl Geelong anymore!! Two weeks ago I went in to get a desperately needed rim sprocket (for ms261), I also thought while l,m there and rim sprockets are cheap ($2-$9) at baileys I'd get one in low pro and 3/8 as I have some new Tsumaras. Well after getting a ms361 felling dauwg kit for my little 261 and the sprockets the guy at the counter asked for $147.50. I said to him "I think you made a mistake", he went through the bill and told me the rim sprockets were $33 each. I told him to keep the sprockets and i'll take the dauwg kit. Funny thing was 2 of the sprockets had carlton stamped on the side. I'm sick of sending my money overseas and not supporting our local community it kinda sucks!

Aee fanks for valuing my opinion but then again you're not a know-it-all little brat :D
Hey I don't blame you for not dealing there anymore, $33 each for a rim sprocket is a joke. Even a genuine Stihl rim retails for around $19. I do the Carltons for around $4. Just check your 261 though as some came with micro/mini spline rims and others came with small spline rims. Micro/mini means you're pretty well locked into buying Stihl made rims. I have hundreds of small spline rims here in .325" and 3/8".
Send me an email if you want a breaker and spinner, I can give you a price and sort something out for you. If you want ultra high end stuff then I'll put you onto Bennn*e.

Cheers Matt I think I have small not micro/mini spline. WILL be in touch! I buy a bit of chainsaw stuff (started off with the pefect 3 saw plan and ended up with 8 saws and desperately needing another!) sheez I rarely don't have a new/diff saw on my radar. What I value bout your c/saw chatter is that it incorperates REAL WORLD info specifically with aussie conditions.
