I have a wedge on ram splitter. I was splitting a knotty piece about 8 inch diameter. It was not splitting so I thought I would reposition it. It was stuck on the wedge so I backed it up to dislodge it. It shot off the wedge like missile and smashed, broke and cut my finger. Between the log and end plate. Never had one come off with this much force.

OWEE! Feel better soon dude. I know I have had my share of close calls with splits flying in an unexpected direction, real lucky to not have taken one in the junk!
Had that happen a couple weeks ago. Well just above my junk. Put me out of commission for a few days. Honey locust is no friend of mine.

Sorry to hear that. Busted my thumb in three places stacking wood this summer. The joke here is that my free heat was not so free this year due to hospital bills.

No pics under neath yet. It was really swollen . Black blue red and white in some spots. Looked liked the blood wanted to come out the sides when smashed. One smaller puncture wound that kept bleeding, probably still is. Not suppose to remove bandage till I see a hand specialist monday. Hurts like a b. I took a vicoden 30 mins ago yet to feel it kick in.

Ouch! Sorry to hear. Looks nasty.

Please help me understand this a little better so that I don't make a similar error. You were retracting the cylinder with one hand on the round (?) and the stuck round sprung off when stripped off of the wedge? Or did it jump up? Or ? Never think of the hazard when the cylinder is retracting, compared to when it is splitting.

Hope it heals quickly.

My hand was somewhere between the log and the end plate. When I retracted the ram with the stuck log on it, it hit the little thingies that dis lodge it and bang. It's was like it shot out of a cannon. My whole hand was in there but really only hurt my finger. The vicoden isn't working at all . I probably won't get any sleep tonight. It was a crotch piece from a limb.

Ouch... friggin' ouch‼
I once had my finger between the log and wedge which neatly sliced off the tip of my glove and "clipped" my fingernail for me... close call, that one. It's easy to become somewhat complacent around power equipment when you use the same piece a lot. We're all guilty of it I'm sure... you're just the one who got "bitten" this time. I sure hope it heals-up fine without a lot of hassle.

By-the-way, a few ounces of whiskey will enhance the performance of Vicodin... ask me how I know

Well that's going to put a crimp in production for awhile- yep I got the t shirt, baseball hat, jacket with lettering, sweatshirt ect. from various inanimate objects becoming suddenly animated. I also learned that I can't fly down from a 20 ft roof( no matter how much I flapped my arms and kicked clawed ect Think Wiley Coyote) with a 10 ft 2x12 chasing me and exit the game without various appendages and extensions there of being rearranged although I did finish closing off the dormer before heading out for some x-rays. I didn't need a Halloween costume that year. ( not that I do anyhow)

Whatever you do don't push the envelope as it starts to ease up just cause more damage.

I exploded the tip of my right index finger a couple years ago in a similar situation.

Log + end plate + finger in between = Pfft. Popped like a zit.

I was happy that that splitter had the wedge on the ram. Other way around and I would be shooting with my middle finger.

I feel your pain....Hope you heal quickly!

About 2 years ago I was moving a pile of logs to get ready to block them. I had about 5-6 small diameter logs on the forks of the tractor. I tried to move one log over so it would fall. Didn't notice the other end was underneth another log. When I moved it, it acted like a pair of sciccors. Caught the end of my middle finger, and cut it off. would have been worse if I didn't have gloves on.
