I believe you can omit the gasket, but you need to measure to check and prevent a catastrophe.
Too much air with a 30% blockage and a 2% leakage? If too much fresh air gets in, the carb won't be able to compensate
I have abrasive pads that I mount into a drill to grind it off. No pics, though, I'm nowhere near the shop. All the crude at the top I would like to get it looking new again
Likely an air leak at the intake, that the AT wasn't fully able to compensate for - the P&C likely would have been much worse on a saw without AT.
I use carb cleaner and coarse steel wool for datAll the crude at the top I would like to get it looking new again

Damn I hate to agree with XSKIER, but well.... How much could that leak flow compared to the wide open air valve + throttle plate? At idle however, when the air valve is supposed to be closed and the throttle almost closed, it might be more significant.Uhmm. While I can appreciate the flimsy build quality of that saw, is that loose connection really going to score a p/c? It is a "fresh air" passage, no fuel/oil goes through there anyway. It seems to me the saw would've had a poor idle and throttle response, with little to no effect at wot in wood.
