Perhaps I should clarify. Durability should also be a consideration. Making the angle steeper is an easy way to increase speed, but you loose durability.

I think the Stihl factory angles are tough to beat in hard wood, but in softwood, a steeper angle works better.

I also think Stihl chain hold an edge better than most, even if you can get softer chain sharper.

Hey Mike have you found much difference in a 30 degree top plate vs a 25 degree top plate? I have always used 25 on my chains with goo results.

One thing is true with almost everything. Speed isn't cheap.

True and almost is the key word. Before I started messing with saws I was building my buggy. I have completely neglected it since. Torque multiplication is the goal in that build. Dual transfer cases with 4.7 gears in both and 5.29 gears in the axles is real dang slow. I like to wheel so I will finish someday. :(

I have not tried it, but I could see that working well. I believe the stock Stihl angles (side & top) are both 45. Since the top plate works like a chisel, a steeper angle should not be a problem. It is the corner and the side plate that cut the grain, and making that steeper may reduce longevity.

Because the factory angles gave me an increase in speed w/o reducing longevity, I really have not messed with them.

I should have said is there an application for each?

What's the basic differnece between a curved goofy side plate and a strait bevel if any?

I can make make a goofy filed chain appear square. But the real benefits of the goofy file is you have the ability to round chain and keep it round or convert it to square ish. The square like appearance will do 2 things: smooth the chain out and cut a little faster. That's my experience with it anyways.

We dive into them with the little saws..
Levi still whining about his knuckles, but not bad enough to keep him from the drive in movie he's at right now..
Soooo..

did you all lose AS just a while ago? i got a you are forbidden error.......

Kids anyways........ Maybe you should give him a corn knife and a hatchet and have him limb out a mulberry tree.
LOL...
We use the little saws on those too..
He's got his favorite little shindiawa 488 that he uses..
