I just picked up a 550. fueled and fired and noticed this noise coming from the clutch.

anyone had this problem before? oiler gear maybe?

maybe the spur or rim rattling against chain brake.... how much play in the bearing on the drum?try turning the idle down a hair also.....other then those i have no idea.... just some guessing on my part...have you taken it all apart and checked it and greased the bearing? maybe the shoe rattling on the drum? you mean the lil ping right? does it squeal at higher rpms?

Pinging noise? My 562 has done it for a few years i tore it all apart and found nothing wrong, i guess its just clutch drum noise. My 550 has never made a noise.

A few other threads have been started on this noise too and nobody has actually found a problem that i know of.

I had just put a 3/8 rim on it and the clutch bearing looked good. I threw a dab of grease on it before I put the clutch back on. No squeal at rpms, just at idle. oils fine and everything else seems to be ok so I'm stumped. if it were crank bearing I should know it. It turns over smooth. It's autotune so idle turn down isn't an option.

Kinda like why a 288 sounds the way it does. Nature of the beast. Might as well enjoy it

Most stihls I've run sound similar. Never really bothered me. I just figured it's what they sounded like. Patina for the ears

well ya got me probably is the clutch then....i was thinking drum/rim bearing not crank....

I don't hear anything unusual for a chainsaw.

BTW.........I never step on my saws to start um................:innocent:
hold a camera and try to start a high compression saw...... that's what the flat "foot pad" is for

Heard it for years on a few saws, my best guess was the combustion part of the stroke throwing the clutch springs far enough for the shoes to touch the drum but not engage it, never caused an issue so never worried about it
