I'm not sure what Palm rot is but one of my 460s came to me nearly like that. The chain cover was similar, even a few spots thin enough to pinhole.
I got a couple years out of it before it got crushed.

That doesn't look to bad, I have cleaned up worse. As long as there aren't any holes in the crankcase etc. Pressure test will confirm that. The hard part is cleaning it when that black stuff gets baked on there around the clutch area.

Ok thanks that's the hope I was posting for

re pressure tester I can get the mittyvac mv8500 for 125 aud but things are tight atm and cheapo ones seem to go for$30-40( may be just vac/bleedersthough)
the word was that the mv8500 had all the extra bits and pieces though

While I have it apart any other things I should do, I have a cheapo dremel and 1/8 carbide burrs :) or just make sure it runs

Run it until it eats into the oil passages. This is a 440 from Australia used on palm trees.

Yup that's definitely worse that my 440. Are you importing saws now Brad? lol

Also its a shame that these saws are used on palms trees. I've found the best saws for this job are the home owner models with plastic case, hardly any damage at all.

I have the Mityvac Silverline and its a great setup with many uses. But anything that can gauge both pressure and vac accurately will work.

You could open up the exhaust and intake a bit and a polish wouldn't hurt. Maybe remove the base gasket or make a thinner one for more compression but check the squish if you do. A search on this site will give you some more info. But Aussie 660's run fine as they are so you could leave it stock also.

I have a 660 that has some of that and it's never cut a palm tree, never left Missouri far as I know.

Any tree with sap that is alkaline can cause erosion like that. Not just to mag alloy but also to almunium. It starts to eat in overnight too and is definitely not a slow process.
I've nearly cried with some of the abused saws I've seen over the years. I try to avoid Palms but when I do drop them it's the Chinese 660 and she gets a soapy wash afterwards.

Ok so in the pile of stuff there was another 660 cylinder and I'm thinking I send this one of to be put on a 064 ported by mick as a BB (or find a064 jug somewhere) and continue to clean this one up with Scotch pad(I have started)/try a BB cylinder if Matt has any left later

But not to plastic. Both materials have vulnerabilities and advantages.

That's why commercial acid and alkali drums are made of plastic :) Other issue being is that with some of the big palms I've had to drop a plastic cased saw simply isn't going to have the balls or bar length to do it.

Aww, I bet it could be done!
