From looking at the limbs that was my first thought tooHate to say this, but are you sure? It does not look like a Maple to me, looks more like a big old White Oak. I've just never seen a Maple branch like that.
Perhaps a variety I'm not familiar with.
Maybe just around here in the SE, but I don't recall seeing any white oaks that branch that close to the stump...generally the first branches are 10-20 feet in the air with oaks that are nowhere near that size in diameter. Certainly could be wrong though. It's a helluva tree regardless of what it is.From looking at the limbs that was my first thought too
