that was with a brain new chain, and now that I rewatched the video, I think it cut the fastest at 3 turns, but when I pull I out of the cut, I am guessing it is hitting rev limit?

let me know,
thanks all

Nice vid your not lean at 3 turns, try 2 3/4 and see if it cuts faster, every saw is different for tuning.. These saws will rev up quite a bit right before they hit the rev limiter. I'm guessing you might end up at 3 turns out but your not going to burn up the saw at 2 3/4 with those short test cuts. Steve

check it out and let me know. I still think around 3 1/4 is good, but don't know if im hitting rev limit or 4stroking.

whats your opinion?

wow thats crazy you would think that's to lean....it almost sounds good at 3... or even 3 and 1/4..... im stumped.... maybe echo has changed something..... sounds like your close .... keep an eye out for her getting to hot.... maybe mountain lake will chime in.... or bike mike...or f 150...it sounds better leaner.......is it smelling hot?

I think you're close too, but remember that it's only 40cc and you're almost using all of that 18" bar. I put a 16" bar on my 400 and seems to be a good combo.
Remember too that your low speed could be rich and it feeds all the time too.

thanks for the reply
3 definately cut the best, muffler seemed alot hotter than it use to be. is that just part of the mod? i will try 2 3/4.
and would it be worth it to buy a tac to make sure im not hitting rev limit?
or is the sound good enough that u know?

whats even more confusing is i was running it at 3 1/2 stock, was alittle rich, but never fouled a plug in 6 to 8 years of cutting 6 cords of wood for heat.

the muffler was definately hotter.
i could smell it.
about echo changing something, maybe my saw being around 6 to 8 yrs old (if i had to guess) has something to do about it? had to go down 1/2 turn after mm. weird?

Mine runs right where yours does at 3. I don't know if it's actually at 3 or not, but that's where and how it cuts and sounds after my mod, and my first one at that. It ain't rocket science.
Mighty fine little saw, ain't she?

thx, and yes, the saw is perfect size for the stuff i cut and its small enough to limb with also.

i was nervous at 3, thought it maybe lean, but everyone seems to be in agreement that 3 is good. i would love to double check it with a tac, but is it worth it for $85 (for a good one)?

thx for reply,
if my low was rich wouldnt it not start on 1 pull and hesitate when i rev it?
and im at 1 1/4 on low.

lastly, if i get it dialed in with the oak being that big, would it be a little rich on the smaller stuff?
i guess my question is should saws be tuned in the bigger, denser wood?

thanks

I've found they'll start easier but spool up slower with the low speed set fat. Set the low speed for best idle and throttle response, and then set your high side.

My AutoTune saw taught me a lot how a properly tuned motor runs and sounds. The videos here on AS are real helpful too.

I had to go out and count the turns on the 400. Low is just under 1.5 & High is just over 2.5. Altitude here is around 700'. Muffler lost it's cat but no other changes. I run TrueFuel 40:1 in it.

thx fishnuts,

the video is really helpful and i will double check mine against the video tomorrow.
and thx for checking your turn, nice to know someone else is around the same as me.
most 400 owners on here that i read about have theres between 3 1/2 and 4 after mm.
but your plug looks perfect so yours would have to be tuned right.
wonder why so many people have different turns on same saw?

how many tank fulls of gas should i run to get an accurate reading out of the plug?

The number of turns can vary a lot. My air filter might be dirtier and more restrictive than someone else's and change the tuning.
It is almost impossible to tune a saw with a "plug reading". This plug has a lot of tankfuls on it. I only showed it to verify my turns on the jet needles and that it's not running too lean.
There are no hard and fast numbers, just use the way your saw performs and sounds.

The videos are a much better source of knowledge than a picture of my spark plug.

thx again fishnut

i ennded up with 1 1/8 on l and 3 1/8 on high. seems to run really good.

we will see how it goes from here.

thanks for everyones help!

I did a mm on my cs-310 and had the same problem as you, bogging on the cut. Getting the low end right made the differnce before adjusting the high. I'm at 1 3/4 low and almost 4 on the high. I was about to throw it in the pond but im glad i didnt, as she runs good now

Start with the H set very rich and adjust leaner from there.... watch the video posted earlier in the thread. I set it rich enough so it 4-strokes thru the cut, then slowly lean it out till it stops while cutting. With a muff mod it should be easy to tell.
