You say its an incentive for the grocery store to draw customers but whats in it for you, have they given you anything free lately.
The store wants me to shop there, so they have low prices. Result - I do shop there. They win, because they get my business. I win, because I get good prices on food.

We all like freebies Motti. Tell ya what. PM me your address and I see to it you get a nice free Stihl calendar. Now in return what do I get from you???

Here's the difference - I don't run a major chainsaw business. I don't need the advertising. If I did, I would advertise my business any way I could. And that meams giving out lots of free promotional stuff. What business doesn't do promo stuff? Even banks give out pens and toasters and stuff. We live in an advertising-driven world. If Stihl doesn't want me advertising for them, that's fine. I'm sure not gonna pay to advertise a company, though.

I'd like a St. Louis Ram hat, go buy me one and send it to me,ok. See Motti this is what I'm talking about, its give and take, nothing more, nothing less.
A hat for a calendar *IS* a fair trade. Why would you give me a calendar for a company that you don't work for? You're right - you'd get nothing from it. That's why you don't do it, and that's why I'd never expect it from you.

You have to decide is it better to give than to recieve, hmmmmmmmmm.
So by me giving more money to a place than needed, and getting nothing in return, that's supposed to be ok?

The grocery got your business without giving you anything you didn't pay for, thats what I'm saying, they gave you nothing you did not pay for. They may have better prices on somethings and you paid for them, no freebies, you paid.

I don't have a clue who you even are Motti but I'll send you a calendar if you send me a hat. Sounds fair to me. I'm not asking for too much am I, your the one who said we all like freebies so start giving some. I won't gain a thing by having a Ram hat, I'm in Virginia, after last week I'll probly get shot if I wear it,lol. Rams killed the Skins last week. So do we have a deal or not?

You gave money for something you paid for, they don't owe you anymore than that, you got what you paid for so yeah its ok. If you wanted more or expected more and didn't get it, but didn't pay for it either, whats the issue.

Don't know what you mean, Carma?

You got all the saws you need. I just told a guy that last nite, 2 saws will fit most all the needs a man has for sawing wood. Anything more is just a want, thats all.

Carma to me is , you do good, good comes back.
If I were to walk in your store and you treat me good, I'd come back.
Two saws is enough, Now If I was to be logging for a living, I'd say three.

Good post once again Manual, you are 100% right. Come in the door acting nice and happy and want to get along you will surely be treated right. Buy something with that good attitude and you will get a freebie of some sort for being a nice customer, your the kind we want coming back over and over.

Two saws is plenty, few people need more than two. Those like me that have too many its merely a hobby and nothing more, not a need, just a hobby.

Good post Manual. Next time I get a good used Stihl in for free I'm gonna send it direct to you, thats a promise you can hold me to.

Motti look at what Manual has posted in this thread and you will see what I mean and why he's gonna be getting another saw first chance I can get him one.

Manual thanks for resolving the freebie thing....

With stores competing, they draw customers by lowering the price. They make up for it in volume. I get what I pay for, but I also get it at the lowest price I can. What is my Stihl dealer doing to draw me in? (or keep me as a customer?)

Nope, that's a very fair deal. But I don't want your calendar. That is nice of you, though. It goes back to that advertising thing. I can put any old thing on the wall.

This is like the bread thing. If I spend $500 on a saw, I may have gotten what I paid for. But at another dealer, for the same $500, I could've gotten the saw, extra chain and bar, some oil, a Tshirt, a hat, and a free tune up. I'm still getting what I paid for. It's all about competition, and who REALLY wants to keep my business, and what they do to accomplish that.

I may be getting what I'm paying for, but from what I've seen, heard, and read, what I'm paying for should be getting me a lot more.

"Karma to me is , you do good, good comes back.
If I were to walk in your store and you treat me good, I'd come back."

That part? Is that what you mean? That's what I've been trying to get across. Maybe I haven't been clear enough.

Well Motti I don't know what all you been reading and who all is getting all this stuff for free but I can assure you there are limits to everything. I can promise you in Virginia you will not get a free tune up, a spare chain, oil, t-shirt, and a hat just because you bought a saw. Why, very simple. What do we give the guys that buy 10 and 15 saws a year? Don't they deserve alittle more than the guy that just buys one, hmmm. If that's what it takes to get you to buy I guess we just can't do buisiness but its no hard feelings at all, you shouldn't be mad and neither should the dealer. You find dealer that will do all that for a sale and you have found a dealer needs sales more than me. I have a old saying I go by, I may smell your behind but I'm not gonna kiss it to get you to buy, no offence intended but no, sniff for a sale is far as I go.

I still want you to practice what you preach though. You said we all like freebies and your correct. I still want that Ram hat. Don't tell me your the type where its all take and no give now, thats no good. So to make you happy I'll accept the hat and do as you ask and not send you the calendar. I'm glad we come to a understanding we both can agree to and live with. BTW, I like the blue Ram hat with the gold stripes, not the the gold one with the blue stripes,ok. Being its gonna be free though I'll take either one, I'm not too picky about my freebies.....

Manual posted another post where he said he didn't need or expect any freebies at all when he goes to buy something. His second post says he would walk in that way and be a nice customer without expections of getting anything for nothing. Those are the customers that get all the freebies Motti, thats what I'm trying to show you. Those that come in thinking they are owed something tend to show it in the way they act and trust me dealers pick up on it real quick. Go in smiling and happy and expect nothing and most likely you'll come out with something, thats how it works..

Hey now wait a minute I'm not looking to get a saw out of you.
Thanks anyway.

Motti,
When I walk on tool trucks, they seem to throw pins, pocket screwdrivers, calenders, hats all sorts of freebees at you, then they look at you and say "arnt you going to buy something" A cornwell dealer did this to me.
I sat the stuff down and said "thanks but not today' Why,
Because I went on his truck to see what he had to offer me in the way of sales. not door prizes. but Knowledge.
I went to a Stihl dealer in the other town years ago. for a quick carb adjustment after break in. The guy looked at my chain "laughed" and sharpened it for free and showed me what I was doing wrong.
Again I gained Knowledge.
If you are not getting this from your dealer, forget the calender, go somewhere else.

Thall - you're 0 for 2.. but can make it 1 for 2..

Motti doesn't want a calender
Manual doesn't want a saw.

I have a calender.... But I'll take the saw :D

Not really, I slicked them both and I'm suppose to get a Ram hat,LOLOLOL. Manual I knew wouldn't take a free Stihl from me, he has too much pride, and Motti, well he has to send me a hat, we wound up in total agreement I thought,LOLOL

Freebies

Freebies ain't free!

I ran a Snap-on Tools route for 2 years, and got well acquainted with that aspect of the biz. I was a sales rep (not a franchised dealer) salary + commission, but I leased & was paying for running the van, along with most all the little incidental biz stuff, including the 'sales aids' like hats & other clothing, decals, etc... About all the company gave up freely were catalogs & price lists, and I in turn handed those out to anybody and everybody who showed interest.

Hats were cheap through our area vendor @$3.00ea by dozen, but the decals & such I took a small beating on. Even at my cost, the other clothing and better hats were pretty expensive... but they were first-rate quality!

I gave out hats like a crack dealer... even if a guy had just took delivery of a competitor's toolbox (and they'd often be sheepish the next time they came aboard to pay their bill or shop) I'd put a hat on em with a smile.

Need a Snap-on hat Thall?

So true, freebies aren't free, somebody somewhere pays, be the company, the dealer or Ren Ten Ten the dog, someone pays.

Snap-on hat, sure, you need a calendar?, I'll trade with ya,LOL Ya know I've been on a Snap-on truck a few times and the guy never gave me a dayumm thing except the tool I was looking for at a price. I was quite satisfied...

Stihl girls are better than snap-on girls:jester:

Just something about a "snapon girl" than make me uneasy... where's Talon when you need him??? :monkey:

You don't have your Snap-On salesman trained to buy some of your stuff? Our guy has 2 Dolmar saws (lookin at a 3rd), a redmax trimmer, BP Blower, & hedgetrimmer, a $4500 Walk Behind Mower, Two $6500 Timberwolf Woodsplitters (one for him & one for his brother in Maryland), and some other little things.

But there is also a big year old Snap-On toolbox in the shop along with a couple smaller ones full of tools.

Steve

He must have had a better route than I did...

Steve... any idea what he buys at his other stops? Sounds like you have him hooked on the OPE angle though, maybe that's HIS fetish? Congrats for being the enabler!

I bought my 029 new from a customers shop.

I think we are one of his favorite stops! He has a few more things on his list but he needs to sell more tools & boxes first.

Dayumm your Snap-on man is buying bigtime from you. I don't have that many Snap-on tools but you have given me a good idea there. I'll keep ya posted on how it turns out...

I got my Stihl calendar today. Kinda psychedelic reminds me of my old black lighted Hendrix posters.

Hey BB

What part of ME are you in? Come down and check us out.....at the least you'll get a free calendar out of the sale.

Late reply, but some have a life offline.:biggrinbounce2:
Located just south of Acadia on Penobscot Bay near Ellsworth.
Portland is ~3H south, Boston another 1.5H (when the crazies with the elongated middle finger allow us to pass thru The Big Dig Pig :D )

Not buying any gear now since I've cut down to 2 saws, 1 brushcutter, 4 splitting mauls, 1 splitter, 1 lady (SWMBO- She Who Must Be Obeyed). We rarely head to your banana belt (Beverly Farms, Manchester-By- The- S__ etc...) .
Send the calendar anyhow :blob2: Pretty Pleeeeese ?:bang:
