So I have my eye on a new axe. Looking at a Gransfors Bruk. Want the axe to drive wedges with and everything else you need a axe for. So I started looking at the small forest axe that has a 19 inch handle but now I'm looking at the Scandinavian forest axe that has a 25 inch handle.
What do you all think about the length and ever the brand your self?

I have the GB SFA and love it. I know I could probably use it like a hammer I choose not to. If I had it over again I would get the Scandanavian for longer handle.

Is it tough to find a manufacturer who will sell just the axe head, allowing us to make a handle for it? Just curious. I did this with a Sorby scraper and saved about 20 bucks.

I'd be missing at least 3 toes and 2 fingers one week after buying a very sharp axe. I'm running on borrowed time using a chainsaw.

Okay so what axe is a good axe for wedges and limbing etc ?
I’ve a cheap, no idea on brand, boys axe (2.25 lb head) that I re-handled and I really like it (28” handle). I use it to drive wedges and make a few cuts here and there. The trees that I usually come up against are small so if I was getting into large wood I’d go with a heavier head.

20171115_112939.jpg Simple answers here BUCKIN BILLY RAY no other. Trust me when i say ive used it to bang wedges almost every day. Its also used to split.. Beautiful craftsmanship. Look him up 20171001_164348.jpg 20171001_164340.jpg

Nice pictures.

I would love to buy some gear so I could pull myself up huge trees and cut away with an array of chainsaws, axes, lopping shears, telescopic mini-saws, you name it. Problem: no rope in the world is strong enough to support my massive blubber, no chains either. No platform or cherry picker. No nothin.

Not really, but my fear convinces me otherwise. I'd jump off anything holding me 3 feet above the ground.

I can't even visit California. Why? Cause it's gonna fall into the ocean any second, why do you think?

I have complete confidence that I would be missing at least 7 fingers within 5 minutes of trying it out.

That explains my impoverished existence! After all these years there's finally a good reason why I live next to a dumpster and a mailbox. Thank you, my friend.

So it looks like he is taking a old axe head and just putting a new handle on it.
Yea he uses old vintage axe heads cleans them up a bit and puts them on a handel that he does a little work to. The fit on the head and handle is 100% and his wedge system looks pretty sweet. Then he takes it out in the yard and beats the piss out of it to see if it moves which it dont. Then sends it to you. So in a nut shell yes old axe head new Handel. But theres much more then just that that goes into the axe. I also belive you can order a special handel made from scratch. Joe
