If chainsaws were NOT 2 stroke, would you still enjoy them?

If ALL chainsaws were....god forbid...electric, or even just all 4 strokes, would you still enjoy them as much as you do now?

Electric might be OK.
4 stroke would quickly be annoying. You'll be using a wheelbarrow to move your saws because of the extra weight. And everytime you hold it in an 90 degree angle for a longer time, your pistons wil try to come out of your exhaust.
I ones used a battery saw in a tree, and loved it.
Trying to start even a 50cc when you can't move freely is really frustrating. And the torque range is also terrific.
I must admit I love being outside with some two stroke machinery.
But the engineer in me needs to block the thought about the inefficiency.
I don't think the noise is a plus.

For me the jury is still out Iraced 2Smoke road bikes for many years on the demise of the "Smoker"s I packed in for a time but acquired a moto 3 KTM 1 pot 250cc, 5valve, 2carb,2exaust OHC motor it didn't weigh a great deal more than the 250twin 2smoke Honda Rs 250 I guess if saws are reduced to camel shite power or rubber band powered I"ll still be knawing away at lumps of wood

Long as it cuts wood, could run off sawdust and water for all I care! Just a tool to me, no different than a drill or hammer.

Some of the first saws were electric. Have one from the Army, I want to say it's a early 1950s model. It's actually pretty light all considering. Not sure if it still works, never been brave enough to try.

4 stroke no, The performance will never be there. Electric? Yup. Many RC guys swore they would never go from nitro to electric, now most are because they are soo much stronger. Keep in mind, nitro RC engines make chain saw engines look like dogs in terms of power to weight. So when this happens in the saw world, and it will, ill go cordless electric and love the faster cutting.

The technology in batteries is still not dependable long term, nor do they have the capacity to support a 6 HP motor yet.

4 strokes are just as dead technology wise as a 2 stroke. A motor in a corvette today isn’t much different than a 60’s corvette apart from fuel and ignition.

I’d say a 2 stoke will always be king for engines that run at 2 speeds (idle and wot). Can you imagine how awesome a 2 stroke angle grinder would be.

I can see them being fine for around the house and stuff. But unless there’s some leaps and bounds in batteries from here I can’t see it replacing a 70cc saw or even a 50cc saw for someone who’s gonna work all day in the woods. If I’m gonna run 4 tanks of gas through a 440 on Saturday id have to have a serious amount of batteries if the thing would even make it through a day of that.
Tree trimmers though may be a huge deal. Not disturbing folks, just cutting limbs off. Probably would have several guys working so you wouldn’t be just running the crap out of one saw. I can see that. Some may already have went that direction. I like them for that. Wife has a battery weedwacker and it was the best thing I’ve ever bought. It won’t really wack weeds though, just trim grass. Not even the power of a $80 weedeater, but the thing runs when she wants it and can do the whole yard on one charge(big yard and trees) I’m definelty gonna add a leaf blower for her, she can’t start mine. Not sure about the chain saw for the price tag. Maybe she can crank a 361 with relief valve.

You are correct, it's the batteries that are the hold up. Motor wize there are brushless DC motors that will curbstomp even the engines in the 880 and 3120xp while weighing the same or less. In the RC world it was an easier change over because they are typically ran close to an AC power source for charging.

I prefer 2 cycle. I even have a lawnboy 2 cycle I use for trim mowing and it runs fantastic.
